Made Jun 10, 2020, sent to the company Jul 10, 2020, published by CPSC Jul 24, 2020

The product, in the report: Kraus Galaxy Blue countertop glass sink

At approximately 5:30 pm on June 5, 2020 I heard an extremely loud sound of breaking glass. The noise was so loud that I walked the exterior perimeter of my home in search of the source and saw nothing amiss. A little later I went upstairs and found my Kraus Galaxy Blue bathroom sink had spontaneously exploded. Shards of glass were all over the counter and floor. I had never heard of such a thing and tried to imagine what had caused this event. There was no cause to be found. Finally after an online search I learned there have been hundreds of these spontaneous explosions of glass sinks. One article attributed the explosions to a microscopic flaw in the tempered glass. My sink was installed approximately eight years ago. Why it exploded this day is a complete mystery to me. Fortunately no one was in the bathroom at the time. One online article said the glass shards travel at 14 x the speed of sound. This could have been a tragedy. I do not understand how glass sinks remain on the market after having seen the potential for human tragedy.

The product, in the report: Kraus GV-101 glass vessel sink 14”

I have (had) a glass vessel sink (Kraus GV-101) on a soapstone vanity in the bathroom. I placed a flower pot in the sink, left it there for about 30 seconds, turned on the water and the sink exploded in my face. Broken glass flew more than 10 feet through the open door. The glass is tempered and broke into chunks as it should, and I was uninjured.

The product, in the report: GV-103-14 Clear Brown 14” Glass Vessel Sink

The manufacturer and the representative I have been contacting:

-[REDACTED] Founding Partner KrausUSA -Address: 12 Harbor Park Drive Port Washington, NY, 11050 -Tel. 800-775-0703 -Fax 516-621-8900 -Email: [REDACTED]@kraususa.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I purchased 2 Kraus Bathroom Vessel Sink: GV-103-14 on October 4, 2013. I then installed the two items at a nail salon located in [REDACTED]. However, on June 3, 2013, one of the two sinks underwent an explosion. All of a sudden, without any reason, the sink exploded and glass went fllying everywhere. Fortunately, because there weren’t any people around the area, no one was injured; however, if people had been using the sink or had been near the area, they would have been fatally injured. As a result, I contacted KrausUSA Inc. and have been emailing them. I have been in touch with [REDACTED]. However, he just claimed that it was a problem with the installation and misuse of the product. He refused to acknowledge that it was a faulty product that needed to undergo investigation, although I clearly indicated that I was willing to send them the videos from the security cameras of the investigation and the debris. I was worried that the remaining sink would also explode and put in danger the people, but they did not conduct a thorough investigation. I clearly asked them to visit the site of the explosion and investigate, but they refused to. Without even conducting a thorough and fair investigation, they placed the responsibility on the consumers. However, I followed the instructions/manuals carefully during the installation and the explosion took place 8 months after the installation. It must have been with a problem with the product. I am deeply worried that other consumers who have purchased this product are placed in danger. I sincerely ask you to investigate this incident for the safety of other consumers. If it is helpful, I am more than happy to send you the related videos, pictures, debris, and witnesses.

    Thank you.
