  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 16, 2020, sent to the company Oct 19, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2020

The product, in the report: Selectblinds.com Window blinds - cordless, pleated, “espresso” color. Order information from SelectBlinds.com: 3/8” Cordless Light Filtering Shades, 38 5/8 W” x 61 H, Mount Type: Inside

My family has window blinds from SelectBlinds.com installed on almost every window in our home (20+ windows). All installations used the provided hanging hardware, and followed directions as indicated from SelectBlinds.com. All of the products were purchased approximately 4 years ago.

On the evening of Monday, September 14, 2020, my husband and I were sitting in our family room when a loud explosive/bang startled us. A large metal spring (approx. 9 inches long and 1 inch thick) was ejected from the top of the window blind, broke through a plastic end cap on the product, and hit the window trim and opposite wall with great force. The malfunction resulted in plastic fragments strewn about the room, and of course, a broken window covering.

Upon examination, we surmised that the large metal spring was under tension when the plastic “hook” that was holding it in place cracked and released it. The potential for this malfunction, and the force at which the spring hit part of our window and wall is a major safety concern. We have two small children who play in this room often, and we have the same product installed in almost every room of our home.

I immediately contacted SelectBlinds to notify them of the incident, and they replied that their Quality Control department would look into it and get back to me. I found this response to be lacking and untimely.

I truly hope that there is a way to quickly notify all customers of the potential for this to occur, the safety risk, and the danger to children for a significant injury.

  2. No one hurt

Made Oct 20, 2016, sent to the company Oct 28, 2016, published by CPSC Nov 14, 2016

The product, in the report: Select Double Cell Light Filtering Shades Features: Mount Type-Outside | Hold Down Brackets-No Hold Down Brackets | Extension Brackets-No Extension Brackets | Lift Style-Standard Lift Options: Lift Cord-Left 2” Designer Faux Wood Blinds 72 W” x 53 H” COLOR TAPE COLOR Snow White White ???FEATURES MountType-Outside|TilterLocation-Right|LiftCord-Right

We have the Select Blinds Select Double Cell Light Filtering Shades (sized 72 W” x 53 H”) mounted to our bathroom window with 3 mounting brackets per their instructions. Although we use it per the instructions, it falls from it’s mount and causes problems. Prior to this product, we had the Select Blinds 2” Faux Wood Blinds (sized 72 W” x 53 H”) in the same spot and the magnetically-attached valance fell on multiple occasions- breaking plants and once hitting me on the head. It’s clear that they are not careful with the way that they attach their products to be sure that they won’t hit the customer on the head.
