The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 2, 2012, sent to the company Jul 11, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 25, 2012

The product, in the report: Hunter, “Lancaster” 54” ceiling fan. Antique black and cherry finish with 5 cherry veneer blades, 4-light Kraft shade diffuser light kit. Manufactured approx. 2005. Hunter website: www.hunterfan.com

I have a Hunter ceiling fan: Model #25658 (The Lancaster). It was sold through Lowe’s (their item #14651).

The light kit comes with 4 Kraft paper shades that over time have basically been toasted by the heat from the light bulbs. Recently I have become concerned that this is a potential fire hazard. I have also had to remove one of the shades since it has come apart at the top and it is in danger of coming into direct contact with the bulb.

I have tried contacting Hunter about this directly, and I have received no response from them. A search on the internet has revealed that others have experienced the same problem, and that Hunter was not helpful about correcting it.

The shades are uniquely designed; they are secured to each light socket with a screw-on locking ring. I have tried replacing them with glass shades, but the locking ring does not allow for a traditional glass shade to be securely fastened (at least the ones that I have tried). This is also a safety issue since this is a ceiling fan and subject to vibrations.

I would like to see Hunter replace the shades with ones that will tolerate the heat from the bulbs, and that can be securely fastened to each light. I believe that this is a basic design flaw in the product.
