  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 15, 2014, sent to the company Nov 25, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 10, 2014

The product, in the report: Monroe 16 Light Multi-Tier Chandelier, 45 x 48, Olde Bronze

On July 21, 2014 we ordered from Hesco Lighting, the Monroe 16 Light Multi-Tier Chandelier by Kichler Lighting. Upon receipt of the chandelier we discovered that the chandelier’s rod and its coupling are “standard thread” and our [REDACTED] Light Lift’s rod and its coupling are “fine thread.” On Kichler’s FAQ web page they offer for purchase, via their Customer Service Department, an adapter that would allow their chandelier/light to be hung to an [REDACTED] Light Lift.

We ordered our chandelier from Hesco Lighting because customers cannot purchase directly from Kichler. We contacted Hesco about the incompatibility issue which they were not familiar with since rods and couplings are generally fine thread based on Hesco’s experiences. Hesco then contacted the Kichler representative and after much discussion among them, it was agreed that we would need the adapter.

Upon receipt of the adapter kit, we proceeded to attach the chandelier to the lift. The attachment of the chandelier to the lift went terribly wrong because our chandelier fell 23 feet to the floor, damaging the chandelier, the wood floor and possibly the lift but we will not know for sure until we attach another chandelier to the lift. Thankfully the four adults present were not injured because none of us were standing under the chandelier.

The adapter kit did not contain specific instructions for the installation of the adapter itself, but it did include a second copy of the instructions that came with the chandelier and those instructions read and depicted the male connector going up into the female connector.

After the chandelier fell, we contacted Hesco who then contacted Kichler who responded, as we were told, by saying they are not responsible if we hung the chandelier incorrectly. We contacted [REDACTED] Light Lift about the incident and discovered that they are aware of the incompatibility issue with the Kichler chandelier and the [REDACTED] rep immediately emailed us a photo of the installation for the adapter. The photo shows that we needed to remove the fine thread coupling from the [REDACTED] lift, exposing the fine thread male connector, and then placing the female end of the adapter into the male end of the [REDACTED] lift thus changing the original chandelier instructions of male into female. It is our understanding that the adapter is made by Kichler, not [REDACTED].

Kichler was negligent for not including, in the adapter kit, instructions/diagram for the installation of the chandelier adapter to the [REDACTED]Lift.
