The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made May 12, 2015, sent to the company May 20, 2015, published by CPSC Jun 4, 2015

The product, in the report: Cree 9.5-Watt (60W) Soft/Warm White (2700K) LED Light Bulb, for consumer/home use.

A Cree-type 60watt-equivalent LED light bulb blew apart in an overhead light fixture in my home, with the light switch in the OFF position. It shattered the fixture’s glass protective bowl, spewing glass fragments all over the floor and damaging our laminate flooring. The bulb itself popped it’s glass casing away from the ceramic base, but is pretty much intact.

We’re very concerned about the potential for injury to home inhabitants, represented by the possibility of the bulb blowing apart. It mystifies me why an LED bulb would even blow apart at all when the light switch is Off! After cleaning up and removing the broken glass and broken light bulb, I personally checked the light fixture and found no flaws. In fact, I screwed in a standard incandescent 60 watt bulb and it functioned perfectly when I turned the light switch to ON.

Home Depot sells these CREE lightbulbs under their house name, but there’s no identifying information on the manufacturer. I’ve written to Home Depot to ask for manufacturer information so i can make a claim for damages.
