The product, in the report: https://www.target.com/p/ge-3-way-light-bulb/-/A-79517935
Bought a brand new 3 way light bulb from Target. Placed the bulb in a UL approved three way touch lamp. Set the lamp at low and after about 10 minutes, the light went to full bright. Got distracted and when I returned to the bedroom 20 minutes later, there was a heavy smell of something burning. With that, the light went out and when I checked the lamp, the “touch” lamp 3 way switching mechanism had completely burned and melted. When I picked up the lamp shade off of the night dresser, the top of the wood night dresser was smoldering with red ambers. It doesn’t seem the 3-way switching mechanisms on the touch lamps are rated for these bulbs. Also, it was a slow enough process that it didn’t trip the house circuit breaker.

The product, in the report: GE reveal enhanced spectrum halogen bulbs, 4-pack 60w replacement
I installed GE reveal enhanced spectrum halogen bulbs in a bathroom light fixture. The wattage was appropriate for the fixture. After about a month, there was an incident with one of the bulbs. I noticed a burning smell. After a few minutes the bulb began to dim. I turned off the lights and allowed the bulbs to cool. I then attempted to remove the problem bulb. As I grabbed the bulb. it broke off from the base, exposing the inner filament.

The product, in the report: a light bulb that mimicks sunlight
We bought a GE “Sun filled LED” light bulb for over my chair. When we put it in my working, fairly new lamp, it flickered and would cut out. When my husband went to remove it, it was so HOT after being plugged in for just a few minutes, that he had to use oven mitts to remove the bulb. After we tried to put my old bulb back into my light, we discovered it fried my hanging lamp.

The product, in the report: Clear eco-halogen lightbulbs, 53 and 72 watts. Manufacturing mark indicated Hungary on both bulbs.
GE eco-halogen lightbulbs (53 and 72 watts) exploded not long after lights were turned on. Two separate occasions within a week of each other. First explosion was contained inside the light globe in the bathroom. The second was in the kitchen in an open globe, sending glass throughout the kitchen. Some were hot enough to leave burn marks on the linoleum and area rug.

The product, in the report: They are GE reveal light bulbs. They are the large bulbs that came in a pack of three.
I turned the lights in the bathroom on; there are three bulbs in a row. I thought it was too bright and wanted to see what it looked like with only two bulbs. I reached up and touched the bulb (didn’t try to turn it) and it burned my fingers and then it exploded in my hand. The light part was still in the socket and on but the glass bulb came off and the neck of the bulb exploded all over me and the bathroom. My hand wasn’t wet. The bulb burned my finger tips and exploded. We had to use pliers (with the light off) to unscrew the part that was left in the socket.

The product, in the report: GE Revel light bulb, 75 Watt (Halogen capsule)
This is to report that GE Revel 75 watt light bulbs (there is a halogen capsule inside) are prone to exploding. So, far I’ve had 3 of these bulbs explode in a bathroom light fixture. Prior two times the light was on and no one was in the room at the time. Today, the bulb exploded while I was in the bath room. The halogen capsule fails and then outer glass envelope explodes into thousands of pieces and glass dust, and phosphorous dust. It’s only because the bulb was shielded by a decorative glass panel that I was not injured.
This was not due to a power surge. This is a product flaw.

Re: Complaint - Defective Light Bulbs
On December 27, 2019, I wrote to you regarding my experience with having a second light bulb explode in one of the fixtures in my apartment and have received no response. Today, for the third time, another light bulb exploded, sending shards of glass flying all over the bathroom. Just for your information, I do not go through many light bulbs in a year so I find it concerning that so many of the bulbs I have used in the past year or so have wound up being explosive devices.
It seems GE has continuing major quality control issues these days. What will it take for GE to address this issue of exploding light bulbs-a shard of glass being embedded in some part of my body?
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely [REDACTED]

He had been renewing a small sports car which was covered with a furniture cover and this is how the fire began. The garage door opener was installed on the garage approximately three weeks ago. The product, in the report: 2 pack of GE Lighting 78797 Energy-Efficient Crystal Clear 53-Watt (75-watt replacement) 1050-Lumen A19 Light Bulb with Medium Base
I had purchased a 2 pack of GE Lighting 78797 Energy-Efficient Crystal Clear 53-Watt (75-watt replacement) 1050-Lumen A19 Light Bulb with Medium Base on April 18, 2017. I estimate that the bulb was installed in a bathroom light fixture about 3 to 6 months ago. On April 22, 2018, I was cleaning the sink in the bathroom when the bulb exploded showering the entire room with glass that went everywhere. I had bits of broken glass on me and in my hair. I was fortunate that I happened to be looking down at the time otherwise some of the glass particles could have landed in my eye. I was not doing anything with the bulb or the fixture at the time; it just exploded while the light was on. The bulb was not installed in an enclosed fixture so there should have been no issues with heat retention. In all of the years that I have used light bulbs I have never had one explode like this before. I feel that this is an unsafe product.

The product, in the report: Based on the product stored in my cupboard, I believe the light bulb was a GE ultra soft white “60W” using only 43W bulb.
Light bulb installed in GE overhead hood over range. At approx. 10:34am, shortly after turning the hood light off, the bulb exploded and shattered into probably hundreds of tiny pieces and shards, thrusting debris up to 8-10 feet away - onto counter, floor, stove top, etc. As I was standing only two feet away, only by grace of God that no piece hit my eyes.
We experienced something similar over a year ago - first time I’ve ever known - when a bathroom vanity bath bar with decorative bulbs (no shield) had a bulb explode and shatter everywhere with no warning. Thankfully my daughter was not standing at the mirror at the time. This time I’m reporting, the risk for injury was very high. Something is going on with the quality of the bulbs, they are not supposed to explode.

Both times no one was in the room at the time, but someone had just left the room for a few minutes. Both times large and small shards of glass flew in every direction and landed on all surfaces up to 10 feet away.

The product I was using was a 40 W, 330 Lumens GE Soft White Bulb. The problem was every time one of these bulbs would burn out the base would separate from the bulb, resulting in possible shock if safety precautions weren’t taken to remove the base which was stuck in the socket. I went through 2 packages of these bulbs to make sure it was an issue with other bulbs as well. Same thing happened.

The submitter heard a loud pop noise and noticed that the ceiling light fixture had a blown out bulb. The submitter indicated that he installed the light bulb in the ceiling light fixture approximately a month ago. The submitter said the ceiling light fixture has 2 light bulb sockets. The submitter said it took him about 45 minutes to remove the light bulb base from the socket because the base had expanded. The submitter also removed the other light bulb in the ceiling fixture because it came in the same package as the bulb that exploded. The submitter said the ceiling light fixture is in his bedroom and there were pieces of glass all over his bed.
The submitter contacted the firm on June 2 (800-435-4448) and informed them of the incident (reference # [REDACTED]). The submitter was told to send the bulb to the firm and they sent him a box to return the bulb. The submitter said he has to take the box to a [REDACTED] office but there isn’t a local office. The firm told the submitter he would receive a coupon for another bulb.

I walked into my bedroom and found shards of broken glass over a large portion of my bed and carpet plus several small burn holes in the comforter. One of the 3 light bulbs in my ceiling fixture had exploded leaving only the filament and base intact. I immediately turned off the switch and waited for the other bulbs to cool before removing. Meanwhile, I checked the internet to see if there was a problem with the GE Clear Crystal bulbs and found quite a few reports detailing the same experiences with this brand....including descriptions of “fire raining down.” Please investigate to determine if they should be recalled. I had some paperwork laying on the bed and if it had been any closer to the explosion area, my house could have gone up in smoke!

The product, in the report: “Reveal” halogen bulbs 72Watt (72AW/RV/H-4/12TP). Manufactured by GE Hungary.
I bought a pack of 4 GE Reveal 72Watt Halogen bulbs from a Lowes store on February 5. I installed 3 of the bulbs in pendant light fittings above the island in the kitchen. The bulbs appeared to be ok and had no visible defects. A few hours later, as we were sat at the island having dinner, one of the bulbs exploded, showering us and our meal and about half of the kitchen with hot shards of glass. Fortunately, the only injury was a burn to my wife’s hand. If one of us had been looking up at the time, the injury could have been much, much more serious. I believe this explosion was due to a manufacturing defect in the bulb. Light bulbs don’t “just explode” any more than air bags in cars: they are both due to manufacturing defects. GE needs to improve the control of their process to ensure that defective halogen light bulbs do not leave their factory. GE puts a warning label on the packet stating that the bulb “… could unexpectedly shatter”. This is no more acceptable than it would be to put a similar warning label on a car air bag.

I recently purchased 3 packages of two GE Multi-use decorative bulbs for my overhead light/fan. The base of the bulbs are stamped “GE 120V 40W China K4C”. All of these bulbs came apart at the base of the bulbs while they were in the sockets of my light fixture. The glass parts were hanging by a wire. The insides of the metal parts were melted. I consider myself lucky that no fire resulted in this. I have four of the bulbs here, the other two were destroyed while trying to take them out of the socket. These bulbs were made in China as described on the base of the bulb but the package I kept says they were made in the Philippines. I try to avoid products made in China so I am not certain what the package said on these. Please may I hear from you?

The product, in the report: GE 150 Watt A21 base light bulb made in Hungary
AMAZON GE LIGHT BULBS-FIRE HAZARD so the EPA in it’s infinite wisdom passed a law about higher wattage light bulbs passed by congress in 2007 probably introduced by some dim witted congressman. this took jobs out of the US and these specific lights bulbs are made in Hungary, China or possibly other countries while a lot of people in Texas lost their jobs. these foreign made bulbs can be bought on AMAZON at reasonable prices. i have been buying my 150 & 200 watt bulbs and others on AMAZON. the 150 i use in a pole lamp rated for two 150’s. they have been fairly dependable. the last batch i bought on 11/4 and three out of the four burnt out so far. below are pictures of the last burn out. i was sitting right there and heard a pop and sizzle. looking up i saw a foot long flame shoot out of my lamp. the base of the bulb and the socket melted. the previous burnout made a pop when that one blew also, but no flames. These were made in Hungary, my 200’s which i use in the garage are made in china. it seems that the GE quality has gone down drastically in the last year since they were working out pretty well having to change them about every six months which was tolerable considering the squiggly ones that cost a ridiculous amount of money weren’t lasting much longer, ten years, RIGHT! so i guess i pay an extra .10 per year. you can see by the pictures that even though the sockets were rated for 150 watts that the heat generated from the bulbs melted it. the other socket had a little metal solder point that fell out when i checked it having separated because of the heat. if that lamp had a flammable lamp shade who knows what would have happened. recently when we were away for almost a week we had that light on a timer. i just bought a twelve pack, needless to say they will be going back.

The inner glass-enclosed filament (gas pressurized?) blew, sending glass shrapnel into the glass outer bulb. This outer bulb could not contain the initial “blast” and also ruptured, sending additional glass onto my head and in the bathroom. The bulb was 3 or 4 months old.

The product, in the report: GE G25 incandescent crystal clear bulb 60w uses only 43w
My son was in the bathroom and I was in the living room, I heard a loud noise and a few seconds later the bathroom door swings open and my son says “I didn’t do it, the light bulb just exploded.” I go into the bathroom and notice the 3 day old GE G25 incandescent light bulb that I just installed had blown up. The bulb was shattered to one side and I could see that the “filament” had exploded and exited out the side causing the damage. There were little shards of glass all across the bathroom counter that were easily picked up with a vacuum cleaner. I am very disappointed to read that this has happened to others and after reading the box thoroughly, GE is aware of the problem but these bulbs are still on the shelf, why? Please be careful. It could’ve been a lot worse for my son.

The product, in the report: GE Model 78798, 72watt Halogen Light Bulb
This halogen bulb was installed in an open style overhead fixture above my sink vanity. The fixture had been turned on for a few minutes. I had just stepped a few feet away from the sink when I heard a very loud pop and saw what turned out to be small chards of glass flying through the air. The bulb literally had exploded into hundreds of tiny pieces. I took photos of what was left of the base of the bulb prior to removing it which are available for your review. I also took photos of 4 areas where debris from the inner section of the bulb landed on the cultured marble vanity top and left small burn marks in the marble.
This model of bulb is made with what looks like a bulb within a bulb. The inner bulb appears to have exploded, then causing the exterior of the bulb to explode. Also when I say explode, I am using that word literally. Glass was throw as far as 8-10 feet from the vanity.
This was a very scary experience. I was shaving at the time and if I had not briefly stepped away when I did, I would have been looking right at the bulb when it exploded and there is no doubt that I would at the very least have been cut and burned or perhaps even blinded.
The bulb was a GE Model 78798, 72watt Halogen bulb.

The product, in the report: GE 60W Replacement Soft White Light Bulb
Hi, we purchased some GE 43W (60W replacement) light bulbs the other day from Walmart and placed them in a lamp that requires the 60w or less bulb. The lamp had been on maybe an hour and I turned it off. A few seconds after I turned it off, I heard a pop and looked to see the light bulb had exploded every where. There was glass every where around the lamp in a 2 -3 ft. radius., large and tiny pieces. Some had been melted to the carpet. My husband cut his hand slightly upon removing the remaining bulb from the lamp. I took some pictures of the glass after it happened and thought you should know. I saved the pieces. If my 2, 4 or 6 year old had been standing near the lamp, (especially the 2 year old looking up or even just standing next to it,) the glass could have easily cut their eyes. I am thankful my children had just gone upstairs to bed when this happened. I thought this was important to report and am concerned to use the other 3 boxes I bought. Thank you for your time. I heard an explosion and came into the room to find pieces of glass all over the room. The halogen light bulb had exploded. It was fortunate that no one was in the room as they could have been seriously injured. I cannot believe that a light bulb can explode for no reason. I am not sure if this has ever happened to anon else, but even one incident is one too many. This appears to be a dangerous product and should be investigated before someone gets hurt.

The product, in the report: GE 72 watt halogen bulb marked as made in China
A 72 watt halogen light bulb (replacement for 100 watt incandescent as required by federal regulation) exploded in my home this evening. Fortunately the large lampshade, which sustained damage, contained most of the shards of glass released by the explosion. However, some glass flew 6 or 8 feet in spite of the shade containment. It was also fortunate that I was the only one in the room and was seated about 15 feet or so from the lamp. While I have been very unhappy with the government’s ill-advised decision to replace incandescent bulbs with halogen due to the fact that these replacement bulbs cost significantly more and have a much shorter life (based upon my own fairly extensive study) and any savings in electricity is more than consumed by the cost of the bulb, I did not realize they were also a potential safety risk. I am 69 years old and, therefore, have gone through many, many incandescent bulbs in my lifetime, I have never had one explode as this halogen did tonight. This bulb was manufactured by GE and, according to the printing on the bulb, was manufactured in China.
I can almost guarantee if someone had been sitting in the chair that is positioned a few feet from that lamp and if the lampshade had been smaller in size, there would have been an injury as a result of this explosion. I have 3 bulbs remaining from this recently purchased 4-pack and I will not take a chance on using them. Unfortunately, due to federal regulations eliminating incandescent bulbs, my options for finding a replacement are not great.

The product, in the report: GE 43w Light bulb
I was sitting on the sofa next to a floor lamp. The lamp is on a timer. The lamp had been on for about 6 hours. About 1 second after the timer shut off the lamp one of the light bulbs exploded with a puff of smoke. There was glass everywhere. The bulb is a GE 43w 120v 565 lumens RVLL50 bulb. I believe it is a halogen bulb. It is not a florescent bulb. These bulbs are dangerous and need to be banned or recalled due to the safety/fire hazzard! I have 2 of these lamps and have removed these bulbs and will be stocking up on incandescent bulbs before they are unavailable.

The product, in the report: GE SOFT WHITE, 72W GE 0.9, LIGHT BULB NOS. FROM PACKAGING I PC 63005 & DESC 72A/W/H-2PK
US Consumer Product Safety Commission Reports 4330 East West Highway Bethesda, MD 20814
RE: GE SOFT WHITE, 72W GE 0.9, LIGHT BULB NOS. FROM PACKAGING I PC 63005 & DESC 72A/W/H-2PK
I am bringing this information to you because of what I consider the seriousness of a problem with the referenced light bulb. It is my opinion that GE is marketing this product with the knowledge that it has potentially dangerous safety defects. .
We purchased two packages of this light bulb on December 10, 2013. Under normal use, on December 27, 2013, I heard what sounded like a gun being fired. There was a flash of light, and I screamed.
When I recovered, I discovered that the referenced light bulb had blown up and thrown sharp edged, pointed shards around the area where I was sitting. Had anyone been sitting in the chair directly in line with the lamp, they would have received some cuts in the face area. A child playing on the floor, by the lamp, would have received numerous cuts. Fortunately, there were no injuries. However, large and small pieces of glass were everywhere. The shards contained sharp pointed edges that flew like a missile.
We have used GE light bulb for many years with no incident, and the respect for GE products was without question. In fact, [REDACTED] including my [REDACTED] have worked for GE in the past. So when we purchased the energy reducers, it never occurred to us to look for a dire warning, such as we later found on the package. The lack of this knowledge left us in danger of eye damage and skin damage from products released when the bulb blew. I must say that it is beyond our comprehension that GE would put such an item on the market as an acceptable product.
Because of the danger myself and my family were subjected to unnecessarily, I would like to see this product removed from the market, and the GE Reveal bulbs be returned.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE Reveal Crystal Clear 60W G25 Bulb
During the first part of September, 2013, I installed 3 brand new GE 60W Clear Reveal G25 bulbs in an overhead three-light fixture. Approximately a month later, one of the bulbs started to intermittently go out and come back on while the other two continued to work properly.
Two days after the one bulb began to malfunction, I switched on the light fixture, (wall mount light switch) and one of the two “properly” working bulbs literally blew out of the socket onto the floor! The bulb remained mostly intact emitting a pale gray smoke and did not shatter into pieces. However, the base and attached filament stayed lodged into the socket and I had to have an electrician remove it.
After this experience, I curiously checked the Internet to see if this was an isolated incident concerning this particular bulb. I discovered similar occurrences.
I thinks these bulbs should be recalled before someone gets injured.
Thank you!

The product, in the report: GE Soft White 67 Energy Saving Long Life light bulb. General Purpose. Product Code 73727 . Mfd. by GE Lighting, LLC, GE Consumer & Industrial, Nela Park, Cleveland, OH Assembled in USA (but the bulbs have MEXICO printed on them) UPC 0 43168737272 (underneath that are the numbers CG67W2-GT2). Bought at Walmart for $1.50, their code 4387. WE STILL HAVE THE BASE, that screws in the socket. The glass, obviously, had to be swept and vac’d up. It flew everywhere in small pieces. It was all thrown out.
We have a light figure over our kitchen table which has five hanging fixtures in a circle, surrounding one in the middle. We use regular light bulbs in it. About a week or so ago the light fixture was on, and then, out of nowhere, the glass just exploded, and shattered all over the place... I am not 100% that all the light bulbs in there came from the same box, but I am 90-95% sure that they might have. I believe that they say GE 67 Watt miser. Many of the bulbs have the word MEXICO on them.
And the sad news was announced a few months back that the US is no longer going to be making their own lightbulbs anymore. SAD/SAD/SAD. There’s no way Americans can get quality products if we keep buying [REDACTED] from foreign countries. I’ll bet the US light bulbs never had this kind of a safety problem.
Imagine if one of my children was sitting here eating, or doing their homework when that bulb exploded?
Thanks and regards, [REDACTED]

I bought about 6 GE Hg Helical 15w light bulbs a couple of years ago to save money on energy costs, as the government recommends. These light bulbs promise to last 5 years. Since being installed, several of them have not only burned out, but they have started to arch and smoke just before they burn out. They left a smoky smell in my apartment when they do burn out. The base of these light bulbs indicate burned or smoke marks on them when I have removed them. I wonder if fires have been started because of these defective bulbs? I have noticed several other complaints about these bulbs posted online.
