The bulb was in our bird aviary room (a bedroom) in our house. This morning, my wife saw that the bulb began to catch fire and smoke. The smoke came out of where the bulb connects to the top of the ballast. She unscrewed it (still smoking) and went outside and sprayed water on it with the hose.
Our birds (100-150 canaries) may have died from the fumes. This is breeding season and the babies certainly would have been harmed. Going further, the house may have burned down if the plastic shell around the ballast incinerated and caught nearby combustibles.
The unit was purchased about two years ago and ran approximately 12 hours/day.
