  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 28, 2020, sent to the company Oct 28, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 12, 2020

The product, in the report: It is a Conserv-Energy compact florescent lightbulb. 13W, 2700K color Model CE13T2

A similar lightbulb from the one that caught fire in my bathroom failed in a similar way. It is a different brand, but appears constructed the same way. I reported the first lightbulb in incident [REDACTED].

The bulb was the only bulb inside of a dome light in the bathroom. It is supplied with 120W 60hz, activated by a toggle switch on the wall. Unlike the previous incident, it burnt out without flickering and I did not notice smoke. I was concerned that the glass near the base melted open. The glass around the melted hole cracked while I handled it.

Made Dec 15, 2017, sent to the company Mar 22, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 12, 2018

The product, in the report: Shortly after the [REDACTED] service team completed repairs and installed “a surge protector” when I asked what he meant, he replied “could be something as small as a light bulb.” We have never had a bulb explode in our house before.

I woke up and noticed my compact fluorescent bulb had partially disintegrated (short circuit?) I’m worried that the mercury used in production of these bulbs in now in the carpet. There were glass shards I had to carefully pull out of the carpet next to my bed.

Made Dec 3, 2017, sent to the company Mar 23, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 6, 2018

The product, in the report: The object that exploded was a newer-type compact fluorescent bulb. This explosion happened about a week after the local electrician installed what he said was a power conditioner. That may well be. But it could easily be something like a 1 Coulomb capacitor which could effect not just the house, but all of it’s occupants.

I had a couple fluorescent mini- tubes in my closet for a year or two. Coincidentally the local electrician came to install new outlets in our kitchen.

It didn’t take long for them to burst, leaving class shards everywhere (i.e. in the carpet). It may be that one of the lamps has dimmers - which I haven’t checked out. At most they should just turn black at the base in that event - not explode.

The product, in the report: 40 Watt replacement (uses only 5 watts) LED clear glass globe filament light bulb (approximately 8 cm in diameter) - 475 Lumens soft white LED, 2700K color

Purchased FEIT electric LED Dimmable 40 Watt replacement globe 4 pack light bulbs - Item/Article: 1050962 from Costco yesterday, 29 December 2016. That evening used the 4 bulbs in a bathroom fixture, bulbs pointed downward to give light to the sink area. Early this morning found shattered glass on the bathroom floor, the sink and around the sink. Found that the glass globe of one of the 4 LED lights had fallen away from the bulb and had caused the shattered glass. The LED filament light portion of the bulb was still in the fixture and providing light. Did get a cut on one of my feet from the glass on the floor.

I have had two Conserv-Energy (BPCE13/8) UL#E170906 CFL bulbs fail and cause a GFCI breaker to trip. I’m lucky that I had the breaker, because on re-setting it, noticing the dead bulb (1 of 3 in a bathroom fixture) and removing it, the thing was melting hot. I thought it was a fluke the first time, but it happened a second time with a different bulb. After searching for the product on Amazon, this is not an isolated incident. This is a dangerous product that will kill people. I’m lucky it was on a GFCI circuit.

Compact florescent light bulb failed and caught fire.

Just noticed the bulb was blinking. Removed the fixture cover. Checked to see if it was screwed in properly. Went outside briefly and when I returned I noticed descending soot particles. Looked up to see bulb separated from base and flames where the glass seats into the base. Turned off the light switch and removed the hot bulb.

The product, in the report: Spiral florescent light bulb Manufacturer is unknown-Perhaps the identification on the bulb is an importer. The name on the bulb is Conserv-Energy. It bears the UL stamp of approval.

    Energy Saving fluorescent spiral bulbs.

The caller had one in her lamp, fairly close to her head that exploded while she was sitting in the chair reading by the floor lamp.

Caller does not remember how long the lamp had been burning, she was not burned or cut.

She is reporting that there was a piercingly strong odor produced when the bulb exploded.

The bulb where it enters the base has a brown burn mark on it.

Caller is reporting this as a safety hazard and potential danger of mercury she believes is most certainly present.

She also is certain that there could have been a potential fire hazard if she had not been right there at the time.

    There were no injuries reported

Caller has attempted to contact the manufacturer but has been on hold never connected.

    She will try again.

Injury Information:How is it possible to know? The consumer understands that such an inerdent releases mercury gases and that it can damage the central nervous system.

    The product, in the report: Conserv-Energy BPCE23TM/4 23 Watt 120 VAC 60 Hz 360 mA UL # E170906

This CFL that caused the problem began to smolder and burn the plastic bulb unexpectedly. The 23 Watt CFL was one of two in a normal non-dimming table lamp with a rated wattage well below the 60 watt requirement. This CFL was in the lamp for only two months and just last week began to smolder and burn at the point on the CFL where one of the tubes enters the base support. Fortunately we were able to identify the smoldering CFL before it caught fire. I have the tube and intend to notify the retailer about the problem. Please let me know if I can provide you with the lamp or any addition information. Please keep me updated on how this report was processed. This is important to me as at time I have left other CFL that are used continuously in my home.

The product, in the report: A CFL Bulb labeled as Conserv-Energy, which is made by Feit.

After about 1000 hours or usage, about 10 minutes after I turned on my desk lamp the CFL bulb flickered a few time. Shortly thereafter I smelled smoke. When I looked under the shade the the base of the bulb which is made out of plastic material was on fire. The twisted glass bulb and the electronic components that are normally inside the base fell out of the base, and where hanging by one wire. Please note that the bulb was upside down because the socket of my desk lamp is in an inverted position. I quickly turned off the power to the lamp and put out the flame. If I had not been sitting at my desk this could have resulted in a major fire.

The product, in the report: Compact fluorescent 13W bulb by Conserv-Energy.

Compact fluorescent bulb malfunctioned. Heard an electrical noise coming from one of rooms. Sounded like a sizzle. Saw a small flash from the room and then smelt a very distinct electrical burning smell. Very disturbing sound and smell and the brown scorch marks on the base of the bulb indicate this is an unsafe product. It didn’t last anywhere near the rated life either. CPSC should do a complete investigation on this product. The internet (e.g., [REDACTED], CPSC) is riddled with reports of these bulbs malfunctioning and catching fire.

The product, in the report: Compact florescent light bulb, 23 watts

Heavy and unendurable chemical smell came out of a room. I and my wife found that smoke came from a light bulb. We turned off the power switch immediately and opened all windows. A 23-watts compact florescent light bulb whose model number is CD23TM/4(N) from Feit Electric burnt and melted significantly by itself. After the incident settled down, I found that the lighting-up part of the light bulb was dangling from the the socket body due to the burning and melting on the junction between the two parts. When I softly touched it, it came separated from the socket body.

We were lucky enough to act fast and to have good wind flows from outside so that the fire alarm did not come on. We turned on scent candles and sprayed scents every day, but the disgusting chemical smell all over the room lasted a good week.

The burnt light bulb was one out of four that came together as one package. We took down and replaced rest of them with regular light bulbs because we did not want to burn our home by the light bulbs from Feit Electric.

Turned on lights and overhead fixture which used the FEIT Electric 100 Watt Compact Fluorescent Light and the light started to flicker and dim for about 30 seconds, then finally dimmed to a very dim glow. Smoke started to come out of the light fixture.

After removing the electrical power to the light fixture, I investigated and discovered that the CFL (which was still significantly warm to the touch), while it was failing, was overheating to the extent that the sticker used around the socket of the light fixture appeared to have started to burn--it was a discolored brownish color. I also examined the CFL and there appears to be some melting at the base of the CFL glass due to excessive heat. I do not know for certain if the smoke was caused by the burning sticker or the melting CFL. The wiring in the fixture was still intact and unaffected by the heat. There was also a slight smell of electrical fire in the air.

I have removed it from the lamp. It has the following markings on its base -- HG Contains mercury 17-4-02x BPCE13T/8 13w 120VAC 60Hz 180mA UL # E170906. I will keep it in case you need more information from me. If I had not been in the room at the time, it might have caught fire. I purchased many FEIT Electric fluorescent lightbulbs at Costco. FEIT part number CE23TM/6 23W 120VAC 60Hz 380 mA UL#E170906 . Tonight I came home to the smell of burning plastic. Upon investigation, one of these bulbs in a fixture in my house had burned out and was no turning brown/black on the white base of the fluorscent lamp and actively smoking. I am very disappointed in this hazard. I was not able to find a recall notice on this product. However, on Amazon there are several reports of this same problem. http://www.amazon.com/Pack-Conserv-Energy-Replacement-Twist-Light/dp/B002I5ZNMA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I have notified the vendor and manfacturer by email. I plan to return all the bulbs I currently have to costco for a refund.
