The product, in the report: Bright Effects L65TN compact fluorescent light bulb. 65W 120 VAC 60 Hz 1.08A UL# E170906

A compact fluorescent bulb from Bright Effects, model# L65TN began to overheat and melt causing burning hot plastic droplets to fall from the light.

The bulb was screwed into a standard ceiling mount glazed porcelain incandescent lampholder and was not in an enclosure.

I happened to be walking through my basement when I saw a little smoke coming from a The Home Depot bag. Puzzled how a bag could suddenly start smoking I opened the bag to see what was inside when I saw a flash of orange drop into the bag from above. I looked up and saw this bulb glowing a bright orange and smoking. I turned off the light switch and moments later the bulb stopped glowing.

After it cooled I removed the bulb from the lampholder and inspected it to find the bulb was melting from the heat and dripping burning plastic down.

This is clearly a fire hazard as if I hadn’t been in the basement at that very moment, the bulb may have caught fire burning the wood the lampholder was mounted to and/or the dripping plastic may have started a fire below.

Went into the bathroom at 950am and turned on the light. Shortly after, 5-8 minutes later, I heard a pop and the light went out. I looked up at it and saw it had a faint yellow glow from the lightbulb and noticed smoke and a terrible smell. Immediately turned the light off. Pulled it out and noticed the pop was the lightbulb melted from its base and caused a small fire. This is a safety hazard and am lucky I was in the room while it was on. 13W UL# E170906

The product, in the report: CFL 9W light bulb

I was using a Bright Effects CFL 9W light bulb when it started to flicker and emit a strong acrid odor. I turned light off and could not touch the bulb for over 5 minutes due to it being so hot. In fact it was so hot it melted the porcelain (?) base and loosened the glass where it was attached to the base. The smell permeated the whole second floor of our home. Had I not been home I believe the bulb would have started a fire. On top of all of this the bulb did not last as long as they say they should. I had bulb for maybe 6 months and it only is used on average 1 hour a day.

The product, in the report: Bright Effects L18TM6/27K 18W 120VAC 60Hz Bare Coiled CFL

Roughly about a year ago I purchased some of these bulbs from Lowe’s. These bulbs are marked Bright Effects L18TM6/27K 18W 120VAC 60Hz. In under 24 hours I had two of them fail. Now normally this wouldn’t bother me however the first one started smoking when it burnt out and luckily I was sitting near the switch and was able to turn it off quickly. The second one failed when my roommate was home. He witnessed it flicker a bit and then go out. Shortly after it appeared to come back on at a dimmed level however it was not actually on. Flames were shooting out from the casing around the area where the tube enters the casing. The flames immediately stopped once the power was turned off. Luckily, my roommate was home to act quickly before anything caught on fire. I checked the logs on my UPCs and no surges or brownouts were detected at the time of incident.

The product, in the report: Bright Effects CFC bulb, 65w sold by and apparently a house brand of Lowe’s Hardware.

A “Bright Effects” compact fluorescent bulb failed in my kitchen. The bulb worked well prior to the problem with no diminishing of light that might indicate the end of life. The ballast in the bulb overheated, melting the plastic and causing the glass bulb to break. The overhead fixture had smoke damage from the incident although there does not seem to be any damage other than surface damage.

The product, in the report: 13watt compact fluorescent light bulb (Bright Effects model # LBP13T2C2) UL# E170906

One morning while getting ready for work, I was showering. I smelled a burning odor and upon opening the shower door I realized the bathroom had filled with a foul smelling smoke. It was coming from an overhead pendant light above my bathroom vanity. The fixture was equipped with a 13watt compact fluorescent light bulb from a company called Bright Effects. (Part # LBP13T2C2) I immediately turned off the power switch and opened windows and doors to allow the smoke to escape. After removing the bulb from the fixture, I noticed burn marks and evidence of overheating to the point of melting the plastic base. If I had not been in the immediate vicinity of this malfunction when it happened, I dare to imagine what might have happened.

The product, in the report: Model LBP23TM2

I purchased from Lowes Bright Effects Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs 100Watt #210691 manufactured by FEC, 4901 Gregg Road, Pico Rivera, CA 90660 about 10 months ago. I place one in a table top light fixture in the living room. It was a standard table lamp, not a 3way, not on a timer. These bulbs are sold to last up to 7 years. What I am filling the complant on is that this bulb one evening started to emit smoke became very hot the smoke had a burning smell that filled the whole house. My wife became startled and we started searching for the source. We found the source blackened and smoking and unplugged it. After awhile it was cool enough to remove and it had turned black. I did a google search of this brand and found pages and pages of consumer complaints of the same situation. This bulb needs to be alerted to the general public, recalled, and removed from use. If we were not home I beleive that a fire would have certainly started.
