The product, in the report: Project Source 3-Step 225-lb Capacity Steel Foldable Step Stool (Item #2893322, Model #11445WHG6)

I am reporting a structural failure of a Project Source 3-Step 225-lb Capacity Steel Foldable Step Stool (Item #2893322, Model #11445WHG6), sold by Lowe’s. Approximately 3-4 years ago, my wife, who weighs approximately 120 lbs, was standing on the stool during normal household use when the bottom step suddenly broke. This is notable because the product is rated to support up to 225 lbs, nearly double her weight, yet it failed under far less than its stated capacity. She was not injured, but the sudden collapse created a serious fall hazard.

After the incident, I contacted Lowe’s to file a claim under the product’s lifetime warranty. I was told the warranty applies but that the original purchase receipt is required to process the claim. I no longer have the receipt from a purchase made several years ago, and this has prevented me from getting the product replaced or repaired.

I am submitting this report because a step breaking at roughly half its rated weight capacity suggests a potential design or manufacturing defect rather than user error or misuse, and this could pose a fall and injury risk to other consumers using this product as intended. No injuries occurred in this incident, but the potential for harm was clear given the sudden and unexpected nature of the failure.
