  1. Emergency room

Made Sep 12, 2026, sent to the company Sep 16, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 30, 2026

The product, in the report: The product is a Gorilla Ladders 3-step aluminum step stool, Model AS-3, manufactured by Tricam Industries, Inc. The production date stamped on the rail certification label is April 2012, and the product was made in China. The UPC barcode number is 7 22571 00749 5. It carries a Commercial Type II Duty Rating with an ANSI and OSHA certified load capacity of 225 pounds or 102 kilograms. The product was purchased at The Home Depot for residential maintenance and low-elevation reaching tasks. The ladder features natural silver extruded aluminum side rails, rungs, and diagonal cross-braces, combined with black composite molded plastic parts. These black plastic elements include the top utility handle tray, the large textured standing platform step, the rail end caps, the feet, and the hinge pivot brackets. In terms of dimensions, the overall nominal ladder size is 2 feet 11.75 inches (90.8 cm), with a highest standing level of 2 feet 9.625 inches (85.4 cm). The ladder weighs approximately 8 to 9 pounds, has 3 total steps (2 grooved aluminum steps plus the top black platform step), and measures approximately 53.5 inches high by 18.5 inches wide by 3.2 inches deep when folded.

What happened that made you want to report? A Gorilla Ladders Model AS-3 aluminum step stool suffered a sudden structural joint failure during routine household use, causing the ladder to collapse and resulting in a severe fall that required emergency surgery. Inspection revealed that a single point-load fastener securing the lower diagonal cross-brace pulled out/detached from the aluminum leg channel, removing lateral support and causing the lower rail to buckle under standard static load. What type of product(s) were being used? Gorilla Ladders 3-Step Aluminum Step Stool, Model AS-3, Commercial Type II Duty Rating (225 lb capacity), manufactured by Tricam Industries, Inc. (Production Date: April 2012). Purchased at The Home Depot. Who was using the product(s)? A 63-year-old adult male (body weight: 163 lbs, well within the 225 lb rating). How were the product(s) being used? The step stool was fully opened and set up on firm, flat, dry, level turf in a residential yard to trim shrubbery/foliage. I was standing on the ladder under standard static load when the structural brace detached. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Yes. The user sustained an acute, comminuted 4-part intra-articular left distal radius fracture involving both the radiocarpal and distal radioulnar joints, along with an associated ulnar styloid fracture. The injury required major open surgery (ORIF) with permanent volar titanium plate and screw fixation, followed by immobilization and extensive physical therapy. How did any injuries occur? When the lower diagonal cross-brace fastener detached from the aluminum rail, the unsupported lower leg acted as an unbraced lever arm and buckled immediately beneath the plastic foot housing. The sudden collapse dropped the ladder outward from underneath the user, throwing him to the ground where his left wrist absorbed the impact force of the fall.
