The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter was appropriately using her COSCO 2-step toddler stool with safety bar and the safety bar separated, causing her to fall and hit her head - prompting us to call 911, be transported via ambulance to the emergency department. Concussion was ruled and we were discharged while keeping watch and monitoring symptoms.

I purchased a COSCO step-stool with safety bar for my grandson in March 2024. He was standing inside the unit eating lunch at the counter. He leaned slightly backwards and the bar broke way and he fell backwards onto the tile floor landing on his side/shoulder. The same thing happened at my daughter’s house with her COSCO unit.

The product, in the report: Cosco three Step Max Steel Work Platform

When getting off the Cosco 3 step stool, I could not close it. The reason being that one of the supports bent outward.

Prior to this failure the stool was great, sturdy and all. All I want is some discount to replace it… as of now I cannot close it. I notified Cosco, spoke to a woman, [REDACTED], sent the photos I sent you no one ever got back to me. I then sent photos to their parent company…no one got back to me either

The product, in the report: A compact dual purpose chair and step stool whose bottom step swing out for easy access with a wipe clean 24-Inch high seat of vinyl constructed of heavy duty 1-Inch diameter steel that is easy to assemble with household tools

We purchased a Cosco White Retro Counter Chair / Step Stool with Pull-out Steps from Amazon on November 16, 2018. The product did require minor assembly which we did successfully. The step stool portion of the chair broke off yesterday when my 10-year-old, 75-pound daughter was appropriately using it, the step portion broke off, the chair collapsed and she hurt herself. If anyone older or heavier was on the chair, a major injury would have happened.

PRODUCT: Cosco Big 3-Step Folding Step Stool with Rubber Hand Grip Purchased at Walmart, product # : 552846254 Fell off backwards. Steps are hinged at front edge for folding. When unfolded and locked in use the step is stabilized by the rear edge support. BUT the step is FLEXIBLE PLASTIC so if your balance starts to move, the step hinges with you and you get no feedback until you start to fall. With a rigid step you would immediately feel your imbalance and respond.

Made Jun 12, 2012, sent to the company Jun 20, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 5, 2012

The product, in the report: A two-step household step stool

On January 13, 2012 a Cosco step stool collapsed suddenly when the right leg assembly broke. I was sent crashing to the floor onto my right shoulder. I immediately iced the shoulder and took Advil. On January 29 I consulted an orthopedic doctor-was told I may have suffered a deep bone contusion. On March 27 I consulted the doctor again, was advised to begin therapy, which i did. On April 9 I had an MRI which disclosed a full thickness tear of the Right Supraspinatus tendon with 2.5 cm of retraction. On May 7 I had surgery to repair the tendon.

The pain was the most severe I have ever experienced. It is necessary to wear a sling for 6 weeks 24/7; following, one month severely restricted movement, 3 months guarded activity, and at 8 months a hopeful return to normal activity. I cannot engage in ANY activity which loads the arm. It is difficult to sleep in one position for more than 1.5 hours..Eating and putting on clothing is difficult. Showering is a challenge.

I am 71+ years of age. I have a lifelong activity with horses on our ranch. I engage in all aspects of ranch work, including doing my own farrier work for 40 years. I will not be able to engage in normal and necessary ranch work for MONTHS. At this time my husband is carrying the entire burden of ranch work. I cannot clean my own house-having to hire help. Our annual maintenance trip to our ranch in Montana cannot happen. We have had to hire help to mow meadows for fire safety, and road maintenance.

Now, Cosco was sent a Certified Mail letter on May 22, 2012, describing the situation, my injury, and my concern for the safety of this product. No response. Not only do I resent being injured because of a faulty product, have my participation in lifelong activities threatened, I resent Cosco Company’s lack of response to a valid concern about a product’s safety.

Cosco has experienced recalls in its history and a large civil penalty. Time for accountability.
