The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

Made Dec 19, 2017, sent to the company Dec 28, 2017, published by CPSC Jan 19, 2018

The product, in the report: A “TARGET” and or “CIRCO” brand White, step stool/storage cubby. About 1.5 feet wide by 1 foot deep a two step stool with built in storage with a lidded box and upper step. Made of wood and laminate. Inner box had two pieces of small pine supporting the lower storage door with a hinge.

I was standing on the lower portion first step of the step stool/cubby storage unit. I was reaching for a box of cereal on top of my refrigerator and all of a sudden I heard the stool break and my foot went into the storage box of the stool. The inside glue and staples holding up the lid of the storage box bin failed to bear any weight. I fell very hard on my buttocks/lower tailbone and I also banged my head on the kitchen cabinet behind me as the stool was failing. My foot was lodged and had gotten stuck in the storage bin part of the stool. I scraped and badly bruised my shin bone on the upper top portion of the stool! It’s been about 2 months now and my shin bone still hurts a lot. This “Target” or “Circo” branded product was poorly made (in China) and should be recalled ASAP!!

The product, in the report: This is a Circo step stool with UPC 490970403046 with a date of manufacture of 5/2009

I was merely standing on the step stool when the lid that lifts to reveal the stool’s storage compartment collapsed. I fell off the stool, but was not injured. Upon looking at the lid, the corners that pivot cracked in half. This was caused by the support piece of wood that is along either side of the stool falling off, placing too much weight on the corners. I have since sealed off the storage area and secured the lid with screws through the side, but never thought about reporting the problem until now.

We used the Target step stool in my kid’s bath. I stepped on it with one foot to reach and change the lightbulb and the step collapsed. Thankfully it was not one of my children, and I was not hurt. It has been sitting in my garage until I just saw the recall. I will be returning it to Target today!
