The product, in the report: Six-foot aluminum stepladder
I was stepping down from a Werner 366 stepladder while working in my pool lanai. It is almost impossible to describe what happened. It seemed like an explosion. I was thrust downward, hitting the pool deck and ending up in the swimming pool. I thrust with my legs to reach a ledge and get my head above water. I was in excruciating pain which was emanating from my left side.
My wife called 911 and helped me stay above water. The EMS transported me to a hospital trauma center. At the trauma center I was diagnosed with acute traumatic multiple left rib fractures (3-9); flail left chest wall, acute; left pneumothorax; myocardial contusion; proximal atrial fibrillation, acute; nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, acute; and pnuemomediastinum, acute.
I remained in the hospital for twelve days.
An inspection of the stepladder shows the left front support buckled 3-4 inches from the bottom. I suspect this buckling catapulted me off the ladder, causing the injuries I sustained.
