The product, in the report: 1000 Square Yard Carpeting beige color with multi color floral pattern, Chinese made Shanhua Axminister carpet
I am a member of the [REDACTED] of Boca Raton. I am not alone in this complaint. I am the one submitting it. It has taken me this long to get the 28 signatures needed to show you and the carpet company owner that this is a significant number of people complaining of this health problem. We know of at least 50 people unofficially but this is vacation time. The card room holds around 250 people.
The new carpeting was put down overnight by using glue to adhere to the floor. The next day we smelled strong odors of formaldehyde and something that has a distinctive type odor. Management had big fans and the doors open. This is the only room in the entire building that has ever had to experience this. We complained so Management had two companies test the room. They found it was normal. Yet, our complaints continued. These include; headache, red eyes, tearing eyes, running nose, sore throat, coughing, tightness in lungs, and nausea. Then management bought several filter canisters. Some say it helps but others continue to suffer.
I met with the President of the Board and the Manager for three months bringing them new information as I spoke to County Health Dept .officials, medical professionals and other carpet companies. All said that although the cause may never be known, the fact that so many people were complaining and some were unable to use the room at all, the carpet should be removed. So far, for a reason they will not share with me or others, they refuse to call the carpet company to tell of the health problem even though the President did say he would agree to negotiate. So far the Manager will not contact him. When I asked why, I was told they couldn’t until they found the cause. I told them that the cause might never be known as I was told by those mentioned above. So far, nothing has been done. It doesn’t make sense not to contact the owner.
After the formaldehyde was gone, I tried to use the card room but within a very short time, I had all the symptoms mentioned above. I left but that night I had an attack because my immune system is effected by my disease of Hyper-IgD (HID) syndrome. I did not need to call the doctor because my fever didn’t go above 101.5 degrees. He puts me in the hospital when it reaches 102 degrees or higher. The attack lasts seven days. I have not returned to play. I do walk in on occasion to see if the symptoms return and have found I can’t be in there even five minutes. Others have as severe a reaction as mine and others can play in there but suffer one or more of the symptoms. They say it slowly goes away after they leave the room.
There is something wrong ever since the carpet was put in the ladies card room. The room is used twice a day with air conditioning on. The people using the room are male and female and are 60-90 years ofage. The room holds around 250 people. The Manager has not taken an official accounting of who is affected by the carpet but we have an unofficial count of 50+/-.
The symptoms include headache, red eyes, watery eyes, running nose, sore throat, coughing, lungs, and nausea. There are several who can’t go in at all and others who play in there but have to endure one or more of the symptoms. I have tried to go in the room but immediately begin to feel the symptoms. This means there are several of us who have no use of the room at all.
