The product, in the report: Palampore, 10x14 tufted wool rug made in India
In April of 2006, I purchased a rug from Pottery Barn online. The Palampore 10x14 rug for $1099. Soon thereafter I noticed a burning electrical smell. I realize that wool rugs have a distinct odor once they are wet. This particular smell is not the same. We have our rugs professionally cleaned at least 2 to 3 times a year. It took my husband about a year to notice the smell. We would have the rug cleaned and it would smell fine for a while and suddenly the odor would return. I told my husband I was ready to get rid of the rug. His argument was the amount of money we have spent and how wasteful it would be to dispose of the rug. I argued how the smell was unbearable and an embarrassment when we have guests.
I decided to put the rug on Craig’s list, but was not sure how much I should sell it for. So I googled “how much should I sell my Pottery Barn 10x14 rug for.” What I found has made me furious, to put it mildly.
I read 2 blogs with several consumer’s complaints about an electrical, rubber, burning smell coming from their carpet. Through investigation, the manufacturer in India used a latex glue that emits an electrical smell. And there is a concern that this odor (gas) is releasing carcinogens. After reading this I have no doubt that my 10x14 Palampore rug came from the same manufacturer in India. My $1099 rug now sits wrapped and sealed in my garage.
Although I have not researched the effects of this particular latex glue, I do have medical records which substantiate the claim of migraines and other illnesses ( soon after the purchase of the rug) that could be a result from inhaling the gas fumes. I also have a concern for my kids who would crawl and play on this rug as I have a daughter whom three years ago was diagnosed with Asthma.
I have continued to purchase items from Pottery Barn not only because of the quality, but because of the customer service. I don’t understand why Pottery Barn did not issue a letter to those who purchased the rugs. I would have immediately removed it from my home.
Please send me any information about lab results and or other consumer complaints against Pottery Barn rugs made in India.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

Hurt, no treatment Made Mar 8, 2012, sent to the company Mar 16, 2012, published by CPSC Mar 30, 2012
The product, in the report: Potter Barn rugs 2 5X8 Wool and Jute rugs: item 91-7310568 Cost $349.00 There were also 3 other rugs purchased but I think these two rugs were the ones with mites. the item number of the other three rugs are the following: 91-7204720 91-3186863 63-3097334
I purchased five rugs from Pottery Barn. The rugs were delivered to my pest free home. After the rugs were delivered I began to notice that I was being bitten. It appears that the rugs were infested with some type of mite. I called Pottery Barn and they informed me that the rugs were imported from India. The mites continued to bite me and I could not sleep in my home or work from my home I was forced to leave my home. My eyes and skin are still affected by the bites. I am in the process of having the rugs removed and having the home cleaned and/or fumigated.

No one hurt Made May 23, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 14, 2011
The product, in the report: it is a 5X7 (guess) wool Pottery Barn Rug. Purple, Green, burgundy print.
I bought a Pottery barn rug about 5-6 years ago. It has this horrendous smell...still. Was in my teenage son’s room (so counted the smell as teenage boy) however the rug was hidden and protected under his bed (still in mint condition). He moved out, moved the rug downstairs, and it has smelled up the entire family room with an awful chemical smell. I searched “how to get smell out of wool rug” came up with this blog http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-question-why-does-my-new-rug-smell-000956 which now has me concerned this smell may be chlordane. As that is the only pesticide that can last and smell this long (over 40 years). We just put down our lab, who slept in that room, and he was loaded with cancer. My son has all kinds of allergy problems. I want to know what is in this rug. There are several other blogs of concern about this http://madtownmacs.blogspot.com/2008/01/pottery-barn-rug-smell.html

Actually I could go on forever. I am looking into the expense of having this rug tested today. Thank you for your time.
