  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 11, 2025, sent to the company Jan 17, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 10, 2025

The product, in the report: Mohawk Home Non-slip rug off. Purchased through Amazon. Product title: Mohawk Home 10’ x 14’ Non Slip Rug Pad Gripper 1/4 Thick Dual Surface Felt + Rubber Gripper - Safe for All Floors

Product Information: Product Name: Mohawk Home Non-slip rug pad Brand/Manufacturer: Mohawk Home Purchase Date: 1/4/2025 Retailer: Amazon

Incident Summary: I am submitting this report to inform the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of a potentially hazardous product I recently purchased. The Non-slip rug pad I received from Amazon emitted a strong, noxious chemical odor upon installation that has persisted and spread throughout my home. The odor, which resembles raw sewage, has raised concerns regarding its origin and safety. Despite efforts to ventilate the house, the odor has remained pervasive, causing significant damage to my property.

What happened that made you want to report? After receiving and installing the non-slip rug pad, I immediately noticed an unusually strong, offensive odor. I initially assumed this was normal off-gassing from a new product. However, the smell worsened overnight and spread throughout my entire house and I immediately disposed of the product. Since disposal of the product, the odor has not dissipated despite attempts to ventilate the space with open windows and fans. I have found that the odor has absorbed into the hardwood floors, and despite trying various cleaning solutions, the odor persists. Days after removing the rug pad, the room is still uninhabitable due to the overpowering chemical smell. I have since learned that I am not alone in this experience, as hundreds of Amazon customer reviews reference the same issue with this product, citing the same chemical smell.

What type of product(s) were being used? The product in question is a Non-slip rug pad, typically used to keep rugs in place and prevent slipping. It is made from synthetic materials, but the specific components causing the odor remain unidentified.

Who was using the product(s)? The product was used by myself and my family, including my pregnant wife, who has a heightened sensitivity to environmental conditions.

How were the product(s) being used? The rug pad was unrolled and placed under a newly purchased area rug. The rug and a sectional couch were then placed on top of the pad in a residential living space.

Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? There were no immediate physical injuries reported. However, the long-lasting odor has raised significant health concerns due to its unknown source, especially considering the potential for toxic emissions. My pregnant wife is at risk of exposure to an unidentified chemical or biological hazard, and I am concerned about the long-term health effects of continued exposure to this substance in our home.

Health and Safety Concerns: The odor emitted by the rug pad is highly unpleasant, resembling sewage, and it has filled every room in my house. Despite airing out the space with fans and open windows, the smell remains potent and pervasive. The odor has absorbed into the hardwood floors, and all attempts to clean it have failed. As of 48 hours after removing the rug pad, the room is still uninhabitable due to the overpowering smell. This situation poses a health risk, particularly due to the unknown nature of the chemicals or materials responsible for the odor.

Customer Reviews: Upon further research, I discovered that I am not alone in this issue. Hundreds of customer reviews on Amazon reference the same chemical or sewage-like smell emanating from the same rug pad. These reviews detail similar experiences, further supporting the concern that this is a widespread defect in the product.

Given the severity of the odor, the potential health risks, and the damage caused to my home and personal property, I urge the Consumer Product Safety Commission to investigate this matter and take appropriate action against the manufacturer of this defective product.

I appreciate your attention to this concern and look forward to your prompt review of this report.

The ([REDACTED] or [REDACTED]) Area Rugs sold at Walmart will deteriorate and the glue on the back will turn into a fine powder. I had a dry cough for a long time and since I removed the rug and mopped thoroughly; my cough is gone. The rug will produce a large amount of powder which I think is the glue backing. I work in a hospital and bought the rug to use in my office. I noted that other people coughed a lot when in my office.
