  1. No one hurt

Made Apr 4, 2017, sent to the company May 18, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2017

The product, in the report: Watermark Designs BLUE 37 Handheld shower holder https://www.watermark-designs.com/all-products-model-detail/shower-sets/thermostatic/37-6-75/

We recently purchased a couple of handheld showers as part of a home remodel. They are manufactured by Watermark Designs, Ltd. 350 Dewitt Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11207.

The product is a solid brass handheld under the Blue line. The handheld being solid brass is really quite heavy. It prior was manufactured with a holding bracket that would hold nearly 1” of the handle. This was the bracket we expected to receive on our order and was the bracket listed in the manufacturers product book at the retailer. The shower holder we received is apparently an updated version, but is defective in that the hole to hold the shower handle is too small. This results in about 1/2 inch less depth of the shower handle being held. As a result, when the water is turned on, the handle due to water pressure and weight can work its way out of the holder and spontaneously fall.

This presents a significant risk due to the weight of the product. Not only can it damage the shower structures, but it poses risk to the user, especially smaller children who could be hit in the head by the falling handheld shower. We have stopped allowing our children (ages 7 and 3) to use the shower due to the risk.

We have contacted the manufacturer directly, as well as through the local retailer about the concern and have requested the old holder which functions correctly. We have advised them to make a simple fix, drilling out the holders in the future to a slightly larger diameter to adequately hold the handle, but despite this they continue to refuse to address the issue or change their design. They remain adamant that their current design functions correctly.

Our retailer (Chown Hardware, Portland, OR 503-243-6500) has informed us that they have received multiple concerns from clients regarding this bracket.

I remain mystified that the company remains so resistant to a simple manufacturing change, but I am concerned about the risk this product presents. I have pictures of the old handheld holder and the new that shows the difference in fit.

As a physician, I see the results of head injury and know very well the potential long term health risks that something of this weight falling from height could have on a child.
