The product, in the report: Smedbo Grab Bar RK 325
Product: Smedbo House RK 325 Grab Bar Manufactured By: Smedbo A. B. 1001 Sherwood Drive Lake Bluff, IL 60044 Purchased From: Gracious Home 1992 Broadway New York, NY1 0023 Severe injury or death could result by installing this product in accordance with the instructions and hardware provided by the manufacturer. After bringing this matter to the attention of Semedbo A. B. stated that they have modified the mounting instructions for the product. In addition, Semedbo said that, ‘a competent installer can mount a grab bar with 6 wall anchors.” All my research and the research conducted at Cornell University clearly indicates that the proper way to install a grab bar is into framed studs. The instructions and hardware provided does not indicate this method of installation. In view of the fact that Smedbo said that they have sold “thousands” of bars that could result in injury, this product should be recalled. Please note: In a E-mail sent to Gracious Home, the statement was made by Smedbo, “ If she has gotten hold of an earlier produced product she might not have gotten the correct mounting instructions.”
