The product, in the report: Smart Water Shower Filter
A 60 year old caller purchased a Smart Water filter made with plastic. There was no shower head size limitation listed on the box or in the packaging. The box photo showed a shower head a little smaller than the roughly four inch wide one the consumer installed. There was no verbiage stating that the filter was limited to any particular shower head size. The filter stayed up for a few months (roughly) and sometime in mid April was taking a shower when he heard a loud noise, looked down and beside him next to his toes was the shower filter and shower head. Part of the filter had separated, and the threaded side and base attached to the filter had broken off. There was no pulling or anything done to cause this failure and it was installed properly. This incident resulted in two chipped out places in the Jacuzzi style tub and caused a thin crack which plumbers indicated would most likely begin leaking. If the piece had hit his toes it could have done severe damage to his foot, worse, if it hit a child or elderly person it might have led to serious injury, death or brain damage. He contacted the manufacturer in May of 2011 and was offered $4,500 on 09/16/2011 to settle the matter if he signs a release stating that his claim is dubious and he not talk about it or communicate about it to anyone. Caller would like to have current product removed immediately from the market and better instructions on a modified or new product that has undergone rigorous safety tests.
