Hurt, no treatment Made Sep 5, 2023, sent to the company Sep 7, 2023, published by CPSC Sep 21, 2023
The product, in the report: Sterling Finesse 47 5/8 x 70 1/16 Silver Semi-Frameless Bypass w/Frosted Glass
Replacing old shower doors and installing a new Kohler Sterling Finesse Semi-frameless sliding shower doors (model 5475-48S-G03). I hung both shower doors then took outside door off, adjusted its rollers and rehung it on the track to make sure it was aligned. Then took the inside shower door off, readjusted a roller and was holding it up in the air in process of rehanging it back onto its track when it shattered/blew up in my hands. I was standing inside of the shower and most of the glass fell straight down inside of shower pan and onto me, had glass shards blow out across bathroom floor and into hallway about 9 ft from the shower. Had small cuts on bottom of legs (was wearing shorts).

The product, in the report: Shower stall door
We have a Kohler Sterling shower door which was approximately 5 years old. On the afternoon of 12.15.16 my wife heard a noise in the bathroom. When she investigated she found that the shower door had shattered and was starting to fall apart.
No one was injured in the incident; however, easily could have if one of us had been in the shower.
I pushed the door fragments into the shower and cleaned up the mess without further incident.

First aid Made Sep 30, 2016, sent to the company Oct 11, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 25, 2016
The product, in the report: Sterling 5300EZ-A Glass Sliding door, by Kohler. Appx 67 inches tall.
My wife and 18 month old son were sitting in his bedroom reading a book when a loud “crash” occurred. It sounded as if a brick had been thrown through a window and was a terrifying loud sound. Upon running through the house, she discovered that one of the shower doors had “exploded” and was all over the bathroom floor. It was sheer luck that the baby was not in that room at the time since he could have been right nearby in the bathroom. The door was used under normal conditions and there was no damage to the door.

The product, in the report: Tub door. 5300 EZ Series Finesse By-pass shower door Nickle, frameless, clear
Glass shower door exploded. No one was at home. Came home to find glass all over the bathroom, in the tub, on the toilet seat, out into the hall - in the carpet. There were about a million pieces. It took two people over two hours to clean up. Using extreme caution, we still had tiny, sharp glass shards in our hands and feet, causing bleeding. We had to throw away a new $35 rug, two plush towels, four washcloths. The tiny glass shards were everywhere, as well as the 1/4 inch pieces. Total loss over $500.

The product, in the report: Sterling 31-1/4-in to 36-in Polished Nickel Framed Pivot Shower Door Shower Door Type: Pivot Frame Color/Finish: Polished nickel Glass Style: Privacy glass Glass Pattern Name: Pebbled Framed or Frameless: Framed Door Height (Inches): 65.5 Glass Thickness: 1/8-in
3 years ago, we purchased a Sterling glass shower door with pebbled privacy glass from Lowe’s Home Improvement store (model #1505D-36N). We installed it in our new bathroom. About 1 month after we installed it, we found that the glass from the entire door had shattered into hundreds of pieces everywhere in the bathroom. There was no incident that caused the door to shatter, i.e. it was not caused by us. We took the door back to Lowe’s and they agreed to give us a replacement door. We cleaned up the mess and reinstalled the door. 3 years later (today), I came home to find the door shattered once again. This is more than a safety “concern”, it is an outright dangerous product. Luckily, no one was in the bathroom either time the door shattered so no one has been injured, but it definitely would have caused serious injury had someone been in the shower at the time. We are now financially injured as we have to purchase a replacement door. We will also have to clean up a significant mess and reinstall yet another door. I do not want anyone else to be injured by such a clearly defective and unsafe product.

The product, in the report: Sterling tempered glass interior shower door, model #690B-59S, door # 1173264-BDS-G02
I was sitting in my study working on my computer when I heard a loud crash followed by the sound of shattering/popping glass. After inspecting the whole house, I noticed the interior shower door had shattered with holes in two places and had strewn bits of glass all over the bathroom. Both my dog and cat (which are small) were in the bedroom at the time of the incident, it had been hours since the last time the shower was used, and no abnormal interior temperature swings were occurring at the time. The door, a Sterling 690 series model, continued to pop and crackle for some time after the initial incident, and no apparent environmental or physical causes could be detected in the bathroom. No injuries were sustained during the incident or during the cleanup, although many of the shards of glass were quite sharp, so great care was necessary during cleanup. Bits of glass also fell into the shower drain and sink drain that have not yet been possible to extract.

The product, in the report: Sterling Plumbing Standard 59 in. x 56-7/16 in. Framed Bypass Bath Door in Silver, Model 690B-59S
We own a Sterling Plumbing framed bypass glass door set for a bathtub in our home. The product was purchased from Home Depot in 2012 and is still sold as “Sterling Plumbing Standard 59 in. x 56-7/16 in. Framed Bypass Bath Door in Silver,” model 690B-59S. We were out of town on Saturday night, and when we returned yesterday we discovered that one of the two doors was completely shattered. Nearly all of the glass had shattered and fallen out of the door frame. No one was in the house during our absence, there were no signs of entry into the bathroom, and glass had fallen apparently equally between the tub and bathroom sides of the door, indicating that the breakage was not due to impact from one side or the other.
In looking on-line, I see that such occurrences have happened before, and I wanted to report the accident -- and potential for serious injury -- to the Consumer Product Safety Council.

I have a EZ install shower door from Kohler which I installed approximately 4 years ago. I bought it at Home Depot. The glass door just completely shattered. Looked just like the pictures everyone has included in their reports. I was covered in glass and cut! Thank God it did not happen to a guest! I am a nurse but for a few minutes I considered going to the Emergency Room as I was bleeding quite a bit.

The product, in the report: Glass shower door
I purchased a shower door from Home Depot in January of 2010 when I moved into my house. On January 31, 2013 at 5am I heard a shatter. It was my shower glass door. Sterling 690-CA is the model number and it is made by Kohler. I don’t know why it shattered, but had it been 45 minutes later I would have been in the bathroom and it would have shattered on me.
I contacted Home Depot and they said they cannot do anything because it is out of warranty and they did not install it. My dad builds space crafts that have flown to Mars and are out in orbit, it is not his installation but a poorly made shower glass door.
I am contacting Kohler as well, but this is a safety issue because I have read of other shower doors shattering without notice.

The product, in the report: Kohler Sterling 1500 D Shower Door
WE purchased this Kohler Sterling 1500 D pivot shower door with a side glass at Menard’s when installed the side door glass was notice as very thin and weak. Small side glass is used to make up clearance for door. THE small glass was bumped and it exploded all thru the basement are and lucky no one was close to get the flying glass in their face. This a very dangerous design as well as weak and not correct to use glass in a shower of that kind. Talked to [REDACTED] at Kohler and he told me in so Many words not a problem with the door door as we sell thousands and no complaints at all. Not true at all and we are afraid to use the door even with a new glass and we were not offered any other door just a free piece of glass as [REDACTED] to me that the company has stopped sending out parts for faucets and likes to customers. AM sure someone or his or her kid will get hurt from these glass side panels and will file a law suit as I will be on to testify.-- Will contact Menard’s home office and tell them how I was treated at Kohler. So am out $160.00 for a flawed design shower door and will need to order a door or better quality __ SO all be careful if you purchase one of these 1500-1600 doors with small side glass as very dangerous,ALSO VERY HARD TO INSTALL AS directions are poor and one must do drilling to install door and lots of cutiing. Much better doors with better hinges are sold at the store

The product, in the report: Sterling glass shower door, rain glass pattern tempered glass, 48 inch width-65-1/2 inch H x 42 - 48 inch with rain glass silver
Purchased a Sterling Vista Pivot II glass shower door (Kholer product) in November 2011 was installed in December by a contractor who built my utility/Bathroom addition. Was fine until last night. I awoke to a sound like someone was breaking into my house when I got close to my bathroom heard a funny type of popping noise. When approaching my bathroom was astonished to find that the entire shower door was in tiny bits all over my bathroom and inside my shower. No one was in bathroom and it was 4:00 am in morning, every one asleep. This is a product defect, after searching over the internet and reading here, this has happened quite a bit with the same shower door, and happens more than we think according to all the people writing about it on the internet.

The product, in the report: Sterling # 660B/SP46S bypass sliding shower doors
We purchased a shower door on 01.13.2011 from Lowes in Knoxville, Tn. I installed the door and all was working perfectly until 06.18.2011. With no one near the doors or bathroom the doors shattered in thousands of pieces and fell into the shower. We are so fortunate no one was in the shower at the time it shattered or they could have been injured badly. Lowes gave us the Kohler customer care contact and we are getting a replacement panel. I will not install the new panel because we are afraid of it shattering also. I feel I should file a report on this incident and maybe keep someone else from getting injured! The shower door is a Sterling #660B/SP46S. The customer care # 1.800.456.4537 prompt 2 and then 3.
