No one hurt Made Aug 28, 2015, sent to the company Oct 28, 2015, published by CPSC Nov 12, 2015
The product, in the report: Glass Shower Enclosure
I had an Old Castle tempered glass shower door installed less than three years ago (16 CFR 1201 - I, II; ANSI Z97.1-2009; SGCC 3096; 5/3UA) and this morning (8/28/15) the small side panel of glass (approximately 10 inches X 6 ft) spontaneously shattered. At approximately 6:30am this morning my wife was in our bedroom with our two small children and I was in our kitchen, no one was in or near the bathroom nor had been for several hours, when we heard a loud ‘pop’. When we went to investigate we found that the side panel of our shower enclosure had shattered. The tempered glass shower door itself is still absolutely fine and un-shattered, only the side panel shattered. Though still in place (not all over the floor), the side panel was shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. I have pictures and video if you would like to see for verification. Nothing comes into contact with that area of the glass enclosure and no one was around, near, or even in the same room when it shattered. It spontaneously shattered. I have contacted the manufacturer (Old Castle) regarding any warranty information. When I called your 1-800 number a few minutes ago (apprx. 8:25am CST on 8/28/15), I spoke with an Oldcastle representative who said that sometimes tempered glass gets bubbles, maybe 1 in 100 pieces, and they have the potential to spontaneously break, but OldCastle offers no replacement or warranty. It just happens sometimes and there’s nothing that can be done. I can’t believe that is the official viewpoint of a company like OldCastle. No one was hurt in this instance, but if anyone had been in the vicinity and the glass had fallen, it could have caused significant injury to myself, my wife, or my children. I will also be contacting my installation contractor, At Ease Remodeling LLC, but I had hoped that the manufacturer would be more interested/responsive to this incident and the safety concern that it poses.
Thank you,
