The product, in the report: Kohler Levity Frameless Sliding Shower Door (Brushed Nickel, 59.625 in. W x 82 in. H). The door was purchased from Home Depot in April 2023 and installed in June 2023. The delay in installation was due to product flaws requiring us to reorder the doors multiple times we received three sets of doors (6 doors) to be able to identify two without visible manufacturing flaws and had to incur the cost of transporting the flawed doors to the dump for disposal. We sent Kohler photos of the flawed doors. The doors were finally installed after the third set was received and here is the information on the doors: Model # 706165-L-NX Serial # SAU3NNNDF 06/08/2022 Model # 1381836-NA-GC05 Serial # SAU3PNDJ6 08/18/2023 Model # 1381837-NA-GC05 SAU3PLWC3 07/26/2023
Spontaneous Glass Explosion - Kohler Levity Shower Door (706165-L-NX) We have experienced a severe product failure involving our Kohler Levity Frameless Sliding Shower Door (Brushed Nickel, 59.625 in. W x 82 in. H). The door was purchased from Home Depot in April 2023 and installed in June 2023. The delay in installation was due to product flaws requiring us to reorder the doors multiple times we received three sets of doors (6 doors) to be able to identify two without visible manufacturing flaws. While we were away from 09/10/2026-09/13/2026 and no one was within the home, one of the tempered glass doors spontaneously exploded. There was absolutely no impact, misuse, or physical contact. Glass fragments scattered throughout the bathroom, embedded in the ceiling, and projected into the hallway. Given these specific safety circumstances, we are requesting a refund of the original purchase price from Kohler instead of a physical replacement door.

No one hurt Made Oct 9, 2020, sent to the company Jan 6, 2021, published by CPSC Jan 22, 2021
The product, in the report: Kohler Fluence Shower Doors with 3/8” glass. Ours is for a ~60” opening and just under 60” height. The size doesn’t matter though, the rollers are not capable of holding the weight of a 3/8” glass, likely Kohler selected a roller engineering to save cost and will fail causing a safety hazard.
We have installed Kohler Fluence bath shower doors in 2 bathroom, on purchase I noticed the rollers are too flismy and appear too weak to hold the weight of the glass door which is 3/8”. This turned out to be true. Today I noticed one of the shower doors is difficult to move, on closer examination I see one of the rollers is cracked and disconnected from the metal wheel, the hinge panel is scraping on the track and can come off causing injury, laceration or death. I noticed there is a CPSC recall of this shower door at selected stores, the recall is too limited. There is a safety risk for all 3/8” glass showers due because there is an engineering defect, the roller is too weak to hold the weight of the glass door with continued use regardless of where the door was purchased.

The product, in the report: Kohler Glass shower door
I own a walk in shower with a glass Kohler door. It was in reasonable condition with no cracks or scratches. One night recently at 1:30am, I heard a loud BANG, the bathroom wall shook, and the glass door randomly exploded into shards. The bathroom door was open, so glass got everywhere in the bathroom: on the sink, closet, and floor. Thankfully it didn’t get far enough to hit my baby or I, as we both sleep near there. We thoroughly cleaned, but now have to be on the careful lookout for stray glass. My baby just started crawling, so this is a particular worrisome situation. Absolutely nothing we did could have caused the explosion, so it seems like it’s a manufacturer defect.

My husband was in the shower and got many small but so many cuts that whole the shower was full of blood and pieces of the shower glass. It was a miracle that he was not seriously injured. I am sending you the pictures of the broken glass and the shower stall to show the broken pieces.

First aid Made Jul 1, 2017, sent to the company Jul 14, 2017, published by CPSC Jul 28, 2017
The product, in the report: Kohler levity glass shower door, model R706009L-SH
Late January, 2017, I installed a Kohler R706009L-SH glass door during master bathroom remodel in preparation for the arrival of out daughter in late June or early July. This door was purchased from my local Lowes.
My wife gave birth on 6/20/17, we got home on 6/22/17. and hired a housekeeper to help clean up around the house due to us wanting to care for our daughter. On 6/25/17, upon entering the shower and closing the door, one of the panes of the shower door exploded. Our housekeeper was cut and glass showered into the bathroom and our master bedroom.
Late morning 6/25/17, after cleaning up the glass, I took back some of the door framing to Lowes and explained the situation. While I was there, one of the employees that worked in plumbing and sold us the door originally, said “we’ve had two this week.” That’s 3 doors of the same model that exploded on your customers from one store, so I asked to speak to a manager to make sure that they were aware of the issue. The manager on duty said he knew about the issue and had spent 1.5 hours on hold with the manufacturer, kohler, trying to escalate beyond simple customer service but couldn’t.
I relayed this to kohler’s facebook page, and I was advised by their page administrator to private message them and customer service would be in contact. Kohler wanted to do a warranty replacement on the door and asked how the housekeeper was doing. I declined the replacement because of the uncertain safety status of the product.

First aid Made May 8, 2017, sent to the company May 18, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2017
The product, in the report: Kohler Levity 56-59 semi-framless bypass shower door in silver. Model # 706009-L-SH, Serial number SAU3J4ZPR, UPC 132220 Purchased 2/25/17 from Lowes in Concord, CA.
2/25/17: Purchased Kohler Levity Bypass Sliding door from Lowes in Concord, CA. Kohler model #706009-L-SH, Serial # [REDACTED]. It was installed following the instructions provided a few weeks later. We had no issues until 5/7/17.
5/7/17 around 6:15pm: My 5 year old daughter asked to take a shower with me when I returned home from work, something young children sometimes enjoy doing with their mama, especially after we had been apart all day. At the end of the shower, my daughter opened one of the doors, hopped out, closed the door behind her and dried herself. After she was dried off, I asked her to hand me the towel, as I was still in the shower. When my daughter opened the door, it slide over to the other side and then entire door shattered! Glass flew everywhere- all over me and all over my terrified daughter. We had tiny shards of glass all over us, but then we noticed my daughter was bleeding. She had three major cuts: one on her foot and two on her hand/wrist. The one on her hand looks like it may require stitches but to avoid traumatizing her more tonight, we have decided to wait until the morning to reevaluate the severity of the cut, as we are thankful it has stopped bleeding. I was left standing in the glass filled shower until my husband had taken care of our inconsolable daughter and made sure her wounds were given first aid as priority. I couldn’t move because of all the glass everywhere I couldn’t move to hold and comfort my traumatized daughter. My husband had to find his rubber boots to put on to get to me, and he had to carry me out of the shower and into our second shower where my daughter and I had to rinse the tiny pieces of glass off ourselves. I had several tiny pieces of glass in my wrist which had to be removed with tweezers and a needle in some areas. After the adrenaline wore off and the glass was cleaned and my 5 year old’s blood was scrubbed from our bed and carpet below I began to think of what could have happened. What would have happened had my daughter been a few inches closer to the glass when it broke? What if those large pieces of glass had hit her head or her face or her NECK instead of her hand? My daughter could have died! My two year old son had been playing right outside the shower just a few minutes earlier. What would have happened had he been there?
5/7/17 around 11pm: I emailed Kohler stating the above details with pictures begging for someone to follow up.
5/8/17 around 9:06am: I called Kohler and was given a case number (#[REDACTED]) and transferred to someone else who was supposed to be able to help me. [REDACTED] stopped me quickly as I was telling what happened and he said, “to best help you, please tell me what your expectations are of Kohler in this situation.” I was caught off guard by that. No empathy. He showed no care at all in the injury my daughter and I experienced. He offered no solutions to rectify the issue. He wanted no details of the incident. I told him I wanted an explanation of how this could happen and he simply said that glass can break and that he understood it was “not a fun thing to go through.” I asked, begged, to send pictures to someone’s personal email at Kohler so that our experience could be documented and reviewed and I could get some sort of response or explanation. If nothing else, wouldn’t Kohler want to document when their products fail and cause injury to their consumers so that they can work on making better, safer products? I wanted to know what safety measures Kohler uses so that these things don’t happen. He said I could send photos to the general Kohler email but that I should not expect any explanation or follow up. He basically said when I figured out what my expectations were of Kohler aside from wanting an explanation that I could call back. He did not care about documenting my and my daughter’s injuries or the incident whatsoever.
5/8/17 7:45pm Still no response from my email to Kohler, no follow up after my initial phone call conversation.

The product, in the report: Kohler glass sliding shower doors
10:30 at night - I had just finished showering - opened the shower door to get a towel - closed the door and it exploded. No warning! The doors were installed by our contractor in early August. Not even used until approximately 1 month ago. I was cut on both hands and feet. My feet were completely covered in glass. Glass covered the bathroom floor and shower floor making it almost impossible to exit the shower. Fortunately my husband was home and able to throw rug over the glass on the floor allowing me to exit the show.

The product, in the report: Sterling 46” Bypass Shower door 660 Series
I had a Sterling glass shower door to explode. I was in another part of the house and my daughter told me there was a loud noise in my bathroom. When I got in there, there was glass all over the floor and inside the shower from where it has shattered. There was no one in the room and no one had been in there for over an hour. We were fortunate that no one was in the room. This was a 660 Series Sterling door, purchased at Lowes in 9/2010.

I am horrified of this incident!!
Our two small boys were in the showering together playing on the floor with tiny army men. My husband was in the bathroom as well telling stories to the boys and talking about the day. All of the sudden one of the glass doors exploded into a million pieces! It was so scary for our kids; they both were screaming, turned white as ghosts, and were dripping blood and covered in glass! In a split second our bathroom was covered in glass and blood. It was complete chaos! These doors are not safe and should NEVER be used!

The explosion like sound and the glass flying everywhere left us all shaken. Besides a few minor glass scratches to my husband and I, my children were not injured. We do feel if one of our family members were in the shower when it happened, serious injury could of occurred. We took off the second door in fear that the same would happen. My children were scared to take a shower otherwise.
The doors were installed by a professional contractor in 2012 and were purchased at Lowes Home Improvement Store.

The product, in the report: KOHLER GLASS SHOWER DOOR
KOHLER GLASS SHOWER DOOR SPONTANEOUSLY EXPLODING
On Wednesday December 23, 2015, my husband and I came home after being out for a few hours. He opened the bathroom door to find our glass shower door had totally exploded. The result was a massive amount of glass shards on the floor, along with tiny glass particles similar to fiberglass. The entire room was covered in this multitude of very sharp glass particles. Covered in glass were the bathroom sink, toilet, shower floor, ceramic floor, and rug. I called Kohler immediately describing the dangerous situation in our bathroom due to the spontaneous exploding shattering of a Kohler glass shower door. They informed me, after talking to several reps, that they would replace the door. They would not confirm if there were other similar complaints. They did however confirm that the replacement doors would be of the exact same material and composition because they do not feel it is a “defect in the product or a faulty design”. But a google search of “Kohler glass shower doors” that day brought up “Kohler exploding glass shower doors” very high in the list of search links.
Clean up of this hazardous mess was very unsafe. The glass particles were very sharp and “threads” similar to fiberglass made this even more dangerous. The ceramic flooring was chipped, as was the remaining door. Had someone been in the room at the time, I cannot imagine the possibilities of potential injuries. Indeed there have been many reports that consumers have suffered lacerations due to this occurring in the recent past.
Kohler seems to be addressing this very dangerous situation with a somewhat indifferent attitude per my reporting phone call. They said their doors are industry standard. They refuse to pay for cleanup, installation costs, and also will not pay for damages to the ceramic tile.
Obviously, the most important issue is safety concerns. Internet research shows media reporting on this issue multiple times with various outlets. Self-reporting by affected families also can be easily found. Exactly what does it take to have the governmental agency responsible for the safety of consumers to make the Kohler Company recall this most hazardous product? If you need more information concerning this spontaneous explosion of a Kohler glass shower door, please do not hesitate to contact me.
This safety issue needs to be given top priority in your queue of complaints. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

On 11/04/15, right after midnight, one of our shower doors shattered for no apparent reason as we were all asleep in our house. My husband woke up to a popping noise with glass shattering everywhere. No one was taking a shower or had taken one since earlier in the day. We were puzzled as to how this could happen and we still don’t know why. The shower doors are a Kohler product, (Sterling) Model 5400-AA, Clean Coat, #511352.54 and they are less than 6 years old. Luckily, we were all asleep and away from the bathroom, so no one was injured as a result. However, it was very dificult to clean up without getting cut as glass was everywhere, in the tub, on the bathroom floor, jagged edges left in the track, and even in our bedroom floor. We had to be very careful when cleaning up. I called Kohler but to no avail. As i was unable to retrieve another# and i no longer have a receipt, they cannot help me with replacing it.

Please help fix this potentially lethal Kohler Shower door (Model # R709062-L-SHP) hazard with either newer handles, protective covers, or better yet recall this shower door. I am going to notify the CPSC and regret buying/installing this Kohler shower door. Shameful of Kohler...frequently putting profits over customer safety. I can live with my recent painful experience installing this defective door but when my family member also gets hurt I take this personally and will NOT let it pass quietly! Shame on you Kohler! I have pictures clearly explaining the dangers of this shower door but basically, there are numerous sharp corner edges on either side of this shower door which pose a immediate safety hazard to all owners of this shower door. The tub/shower area is already a hazard for senior citizens but is made worse with this shower door which I just installed as part of a bathroom renovation. during installation by my contractor he mentioned these new shower doors had extremely sharp edges posing a serious safety hazard to people who bath or shower. I have already been injured cleaning this door and while painful it has reoccurred again for family members. I can clearly provide picture which will help...please advise if I can send them to assist with my concern

RE: Kohler/Sterling 660B/SP-46S glass shower door
The door spontaneously exploded into thousands of pieces of glass in the shower and in the bathroom. No one was in the room at the time. I contacted Kohler. They blew it off and offered only to replace the door with an identical model. The representative said it only happens “rarely.” Obviously, I don’t want to install another defective and dangerous door.
When I researched exploding shower doors, I found a number of incidents from this manufacturer and at least one recall. This door is a serious injury waiting to happen.

As directed by the Lowe’s Customer Service Representative, I contacted Kohler and asked about the doors. I was told the door was out of warranty and had to pay $98.90 to get a replacement door.
Based on what I have read on this spontaneous shattering of these doors for what was referred to as “Micro Flaws” during the manufacture process for a variety of shower door models sold by Kohler, some of which have been recalled (except for the model I purchased), something does not seem right that a consumer has to pay for a replacement door for something that known to have a problem.

The product, in the report: Over-the-tub Kohler Fluence sliding glass door in brushed nickel
My husband and I awoke to a crash at 1:30 a.m. When we went into the bathroom, we saw that one of the Kohler Fluence sliding glass doors had spontaneously shattered. Glass was everywhere. Pieces of the door were still in the railing at the bottom of the slide so the door didn’t fall; it just shattered in place. The shower hadn’t been used in a couple of days, it was only two years old, and was typically used only 3-4 times a week. Thank God everyone was asleep when this happened or someone could have been seriously injured by the shattering glass.

The product, in the report: outer glass door of 2 kohler glass shower doors
On July 25 at about 10:15pm we were all in the kitchen and heard a large crash from upstairs. We then discovered one of the two glass doors on our shower had shattered all over the floor and inside the shower. We needed to clean it up immediately as we have 2 children in the house. Though we wore shoes and gloves we had several cuts on fingers and feet and knees from the clean up process.

One of the shower doors in our downstairs bathroom spontaneously shattered at 8:30 p.m. on June 25, 2015. The shower doors were Kohler Fluence Frameless Sliding Shower Doors, which were 3 years-old and purchased in 2012 from Lowe’s in New Carrollton, MD. The shower doors were well-maintained (as this shower is only occasionally used). We were sitting in the living room when we heard a large crash. Thankfully no one was in the bathroom at the time or in the area immediately outside the bathroom where glass was also found. As we have two small children, this was a very frightening occurrence--and one that we did not know was possible. The glass from one of the shower doors literally exploded and shattered all over the bathroom floor. In the process of cleaning up the glass, my husband experienced some small cuts.

The product, in the report: bypass frameless shower doors
I was cleaning my Kohler tempered glass frameless shower door and it exploded. I was covered in shards of glass and had multiple cuts and one huge gash in my leg, I have the photos to substantiate. Four days later I am still removing shards of glass from my arms and legs and hands. The gash was nearly a quarter inch deep and approximately an inch and a half long. I was alone when it happened, covered in blood, trying avoid any further injury. Glass blew the entire eight foot diameter of my bathroom and into other rooms. This product should not be on the market. I have the receipt from my purchase.

The product, in the report: Kohler K702200-SHPAA shower glass door
In the middle of the night (2am), we woke up to a loud crashing sound. We checked the bathroom to see that the glass door had completely shattered, and it looked like it had exploded because glass had come all the way out into the hall way. Even though it was tempered glass, there were dangerous, sharp pieces scattered all around. I cut my hand while checking it out. We have been using the shower door with normal use, and it had no cracks that we could see. It was a Kohler K702200-SHPAA. It was perhaps, 5-6 years old.

Kohler shower door exploded. Model #K702200. Shower doors have been used maybe 40 times. No indication of cracks. No one was injured but if anyone was in the shower they would have been cut. Contacted Kohler and they stated that there was a one year warranty and it had expired. It probably exploded because we have more sunshine in Hawaii and the product was no longer made, yet they are still selling them at Lowes here. They just gave me the run around. I suggest if they really think this is the cause they should not be allowed to sell their product any where that the sun shines.

Around 9:40PM last night my husband and I were getting ready to go to bed. I was in the kitchen and he in the living room and we heard a loud crash and a popping sound (almost like pop corn). When we rushed to investigate we noticed the entire right door on our shower had shattered. It continued to make this popping sound for quite some time. Glass went EVERYWHERE (in the closed toilet, down the hallway, i’m assuming down the tub drain). It was a mess. It took over an hour using a dust pan and broom and a [REDACTED]. I’m still uncertain if we got all of the glass up. No major injuries were sustained. Just a few small nicks on hands as we were cleaning up the mess. I got right online afterwards and saw there was a recall on a similar model

The product, in the report: Glass shower door for round shower enclosure. Double door style.
The glass shower door on our round enclosure door just shattered. My sister was using the shower when she was done she touched the handle to slide the door and the glass just shattered and shot everywhere. Glass was all over the place and we were not able to open the bathroom door in the beginning when she screamed for help. We had to stick a broom through a crack and sweep the shatter pieces to the side before we were able to free her. Luckily she was not seriously hurt and did not have deep cuts.
We bought the shower door from Home Depot over 10 years ago. I believe it is either a kohler, maax or sterling based on the brands that Home Depot carry.

The product, in the report: It is a two door sliding glass shower/tub unit.
On May 18, 2014 around 12:25 A.M. my husband was in the family room watching T.V. when he heard a loud noise coming from the hallway. Everyone else was asleep at this time, there are 9 people living in the house and only 4 people who use this hall bathroom to take a shower from the ages of 20-82. My husband got up to see what and where the noise came from. He opened the bathroom door, turned on the light and saw the glass shower door had exploded. He woke me up to show me what had just happened. I witnessed glass popping and heard sizzling noises coming from the glass in the tub. I was in shock, never dreamed something like this could happen. Glass even went into the drain pipe. Because of the glass in the drain pipe, now we will have to call someone to come and get the glass out of the pipe. My husband is disabled and is not able to fix this problem. If someone had been in the shower at the time that door exploded, there is no doubt in my mind serious injuries would have occured. The product is of Kohler Company; item: STERLING 5400-AA; S11352.54; Clean Coat TM. I will be contacting Kohler Co. by phone and mail regarding the situation that has occurred.

The product, in the report: One of the (two) slider Kohler Obscured tempered glass shower doors- Size: 28 “X 68 1/4” that went with the Kohler Cape Hatteras 5’ shower #K-1524.
Around 1:00 pm on Friday, January 25th, 2013 we heard a loud noise and we thought it was ice and snow sliding off our roof but when we went to bed at 10:00 pm and walked into our bathroom and found that our Frosted Kohler Glass Shower Door had exploded with glass every where in the bathroom. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the glass was every where around the room. We purchased this condo new in April of 2004 and this is what the builder had installed so it came with the new condo. The shower door is 8 1/2 years old and there is only myself and my husband who live here and we are both in our 70’s so the door has not been abused. I read that Kohler had to recall glass shower doors in 2011 and want to know if there is another recall on them. I would like to know if there are any safety issues or concerns with Kohler glass doors and if they will pay to have the glass replaced. Have there been any other reports of Kohler glass shower doors exploding and where safety is a primary concern should we not buy Kohler products. I also thought they were a reliable company but now I am concerned and would like an answer as to why our shower door exploded. Does Kohler stand behind their products? We brought their product in good faith and I feel they should stand behind their products. Thankfully, the only one who got cut was our small dog who must have gone in the bathroom after the door exploded -for she like to lay on the rug by the heater.

The product, in the report: Kohler glass shower door (that fits over tub). Model #K-702200
A few years ago my husband and I remodeled a bathroom. We installed new shower doors over an existing bath tub. The glass shower doors were made by Kohler - product #K-702200. This weekend one of the shower doors spontaneously burst into thousands of little glass pieces. The door simply shattered. No one was home at the time. As I returned home and entered the house I could hear the grass cracking and popping. We estimate that 20 pounds of broken shattered glass was all over our bathroom. We had never seen any cracks or damage on the door. Luckily no one was in the shower at the time. Shower doors simply shouldn’t shatter with no warning. A quick google search shows that this is not unheard of...

Hurt, care not known Made Jan 4, 2013, sent to the company Jan 18, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 4, 2013
The product, in the report: Kohler Fluence Frameless Crystal Clear Glass Shower Door Model R-700206-L-SHP, Polished Silver
The glass shower door in my middle school son’s bathroom spontaneously shattered. No one was in the room when it happened and the room had not been even occupied in at least an hour. It sounded like a gunshot followed by raining glass. There was over 6” of tempered glass chunks in the bathtub, the toilet, and next to the tub. The door did not fall out of the track, as evidenced by the rollers and slides still being in place with bits of glass clinging to them.
I was cut up (even wearing gloves) trying to clean up the glass pieces (about 30 or 40 pounds) from the tub, floor and in the toilet.
I can’t imagine what the damage and injury would have been to my son had he been naked in the shower or sitting on the toilet next to the shower. Even the tempered glass would have definitely cut him up. If he would have been in the shower, his feet would have been sliced to ribbons if he had tried to move at all to walk out of the 6” of glass.
I called the manufacture of the door (Kohler) and they claimed spontaneous shattering almost never occures and that the door must have been hung wrong (it was professionally installed and the frame is still completely level), missing its rubber bumpers (they are still in place) or that it had been struck with an object (never). However, I found numberous bloody pictures and reports on the internet of this exact model shattering, along with a recall one month ago of another of their shower doors. The customer support person even said that the doors can get cracks if you “bump” them while in the shower. How can a product be sold like a shower door that can’t even be bumped with your elbow while shampooing your hair! It is such a forseeable and reasonable occurance in a shower. She worked very hard to try to make it seem that we had caused the breakage.

No one hurt Made Dec 15, 2012, sent to the company Jan 3, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 17, 2013
The product, in the report: Kohler Bright Polished Silver Framed Tub Door
On Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 I was sitting in my kitchen reading the mail when I heard a loud explosion . I was not sure what it was, I ran upstairs and looked in every room, but when I got to the bathroom I saw glass everywhere. The tub was filled with glass and it was all over the bathroom. I could not believe what happened and just felt lucky that my handicapped son or myself were not in the bathroom. When my husband came home and I told him what happened, he could not believe either, since we never heard of this before. Anyway, my husband went to Lowes the same night to replace the door and he was informed by one of the salesmen that he had occasionally heard of exploding shower doors and told us to call the manufacturer, Kohler, and tell the what happened. When my husband called Kohler he was told that it is uncommon but it and happen, shower doors exploding. A Kohler representative told us that they would send a replacement door within 4 - 6 weeks.

The product, in the report: Kohler Glass Shower Enclosure 1500D
Went upstairs to brush my teeth before going to bed and noticed a cracking pattern in the glass door of my shower stall; I thought it was just water. I had taken a shower a few hours before, and thought that it was odd that the water had not yet dried and was in such an odd pattern. When I pushed on the glass, it just shattered into a hundred pieces.
