No one hurt Made Mar 31, 2026, sent to the company Jun 4, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 18, 2026
The product, in the report: Sliding glass shower door
The interior shower door shattered spontaneously. The shower was not in use at the time.
The consumer’s husband removed the exterior door and sat it down on the floor, before entering the stairs. He opened the door to the stairs and tilted the shower door in preparation to pick it up and it shattered spontaneously. This incident happened a few hours after the first door shattered.
The consumer checked online and saw numerous other similar reports about this brand of shower doors shattering.
The consumer moved into the home in January 2017, and the shower doors were already installed when they moved in. The prior owner indicated the specific brand of cleaning materials they used to clean the shower doors and the consumer continued using the same brand of cleaners, the entire time she lived in the home.

The product, in the report: Basco shower door 30 X 75 X 7/16” fixed glass panel. Part of kit QCI15228 Model panel part #CLH30X75GPPPP01 batch number 140053
Here is a copy of an email I sent to Basco. It pretty much tells the story: Good day: Yesterday I attempted to install the stationary panel of your door kit QCI5288. Due to the weight of the glass I had hired a local handyman to assist me. We moved the glass from my pickup into the bathroom without incident, but as we were poised to lower the panel in place, it literally exploded. This happened while the panel was suspended in midair, we didn’t bang it into anything or drop it. It simply shattered on its own. I found some of the fragments over 20 feet away. My handyman assistant said he had the same thing happen to him before, he wasn’t sure of the brand of door. Both of the doors this happened to came from the Lowes Venice, Florida store Luckily, we both received only some minor cuts on our legs and hands, but it could have been a lot worse. Now I am without the use of my shower for who knows how long. I contacted Lowes yesterday and pretty much got the runaround. I will attempt to meet with the store manager on Monday to see if we resolve the issue. Please call me at your earliest convenience.

The product, in the report: Basco 7 ft by 9 1/2 ft shower door
The consumer stated that the shower door was installed in 2015.
On the weekend before Labor Day, the consumer was in the bathroom. As she was leaving, she heard what sounded like a shot. The consumer thought that someone had shot through the bathroom window. When she glanced toward the shower door, she saw a 3 inch hole with a line going down. The shower door was shattering. The consumer called the person who installed the door. The installer came the next night and cleaned up the glass.
No one was injured.

The product, in the report: Frosted glass shower door with metal frame, measuring 21 5/8 x 65 5/8 inches.
I heard a loud crashing-type noise, as if something large had fallen. I started looking around and found that one of my shower doors was shattered into many small pieces. Luckily, no one was using or near the shower at the time the door shattered, and the other shower door remains intact. The closest person was about 25 feet away in the adjoining bedroom. Another person and myself sustained minor cuts from cleaning up the small glass pieces.

First aid Made Jun 9, 2019, sent to the company Jul 2, 2019, published by CPSC Jul 17, 2019
The product, in the report: Basco Infinity glass sliding shower door
14 years ago we purchased Basco Infinity glass sliding shower doors from FW Webb. Two days ago, while my husband and I were standing by the shower (my husband was facing the shower) one of the glass doors suddenly EXPLODED violently, with such velocity that it sent pieces/shards of glass into the adjoining bedroom. My husband ended up ankle deep in sharp pieces and tiny shards of glass, and the velocity of the explosion left tiny shards of glass embedded in our skin. We were very fortunate and it resulted in only small cuts, but it could have been much worse. These doors are sold as safety glass, and should never explode like this, or even shatter the way it did. I looked online and it appears that this is an issue that has happened to many families and has been a known issue in the industry. It took us hours to clean up all the glass, and days later we are still finding pieces of glass in unexpected places (due to the force of the explosion). We were fortunate not to be severely hurt and want some sort of action/investigation taken so this does not happen to others. We are now faced with having to remove the remaining door, while worrying about the potential of another explosion. We are also faced with the large cost of replacement, and the concern about replacement with another glass enclosure. Any help you can offer is appreciated [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Basco glass sliding door - 40-44 inches
Basco shower door slider - very careful with install -- door exploded in my hand - I did not bump the door or nick the door .. exploded - glass flew everywhere. Amazon was the seller - they are sending a replacement door. I called the company - Basco - but they did not seem to concerned. I am afraid of installing the replacement door and what happens if either door exploded while someone is in the shower - could be very deadly as the shower is very small..

The product, in the report: Basco Vinesse 45”-47” rolling glass shower door & inline panel, 3/8” clear glass with AquaglideXP glass protection, brushed nickel finish, 76” height, VINA-935-47PBN
A Basco tempered glass shower door spontaneously shattered just as my husband finished showering.
My husband’s hand was injured in the process as the back of his left hand was punctured by the glass and he was bleeding.
I was downstairs when I heard the explosion and upon entering the bathroom, glass was everywhere and my husband was still standing in the shower bleeding. I gave him a towel to wrap his hand and placed a mat on the floor so he could exit the shower.
I contacted Basco regarding the incident, and their response was “tempered glass may spontaneously shatter for no apparent reason and that it is a characteristic of tempered glass”.
We never realized this to be a characteristic of tempered glass -- spontaneously shatter for no apparent reason!

No one hurt Made Oct 12, 2016, sent to the company Oct 20, 2016, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2016
The product, in the report: Basco shower sliding glass doors. 2 doors are full length, approximately 6 feet in length, each hanging from two top mounted holders in a sliding track. The specific door which exploded was the right side, interior door, which slides behind the left side door when both are moved to one side, so it is on the interior of the shower.
At 3:20 am est I was awoken to a monstrous crash. When I got up to investigate I discovered that my glass shower door had exploded. Specifically, I have a large walk in shower, enclosed by two full length glass doors on top mounted sliding tracks, manufactured by Basco. The doors were likely installed when the building was constructed in approximately 2003. The right side door, which is on the interior side of the shower when the doors are moved so they overlap, was the one which exploded. When I entered my bathroom the glass from the door covered the shower floor, much of my bathroom floor, and several pieces had been ejected into my bedroom. The mounts in the track at the top of the frame were almost completely clear of glass particles.

The product, in the report: Basco Shower door/wall
On the morning of October 4th, at approximately 7:20 AM, the glass wall to our shower shattered. No one was in the shower at the time and the shower had not yet been used that morning.
We heard a loud noise (boom) which we thought came from our upstairs neighbor. After the boom, we also heard what sounded like water dripping from the shower head in the bathroom. After turning on the light in the bathroom, we found our shower wall shattered and small pieces of glass were falling to the shower and tile floor.

Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 28, 2013, sent to the company Sep 6, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 20, 2013
The product, in the report: sliding glass shower door
One of the two sliding glass shower doors in my bathroom exploded into millions of pieces without warning. I had been experiencing a problem with that door continually coming off the track. I would lift it up and settle it back on the track and it would work fine for awhile. Then one day it wouldn’t after a screw fell to the floor. I suspect it was part of the track roller mechanism. I had a friend come over to fix the problem. As he was [gently] removing the bottom piece so as to remove the door, it exploded on him. He got a couple of small cuts on his arms but nothing serious. I have since researched this as learned that exploding tempered glass is not that uncommon, especially with shower doors. The manufacturer is Basco. I have notified them of the problem but do not wish a replacement as I would never feel safe with another glass enclosure.
