The product, in the report: Yanmar Diesel generator

I was operating my Yanmar YDG 3700 Generator during hurricane Irene.Machine is small diesel powered 3700 watt generator (2007). On the second day of operation machine became loud, exhibited heavy smoking and expelled 6-8 inch flames from exhaust. I was asleep and was awakened early by the noise. Generator was powering my home during the massive state wide power outage. When I arrived at Generator flames were shooting from the exhaust and entire muffler was cherry red. This generator was operating in the doorway of my garage. If I had not awoken generator could have easily burned down my garage and possible adjoining house. I Innately thought that gen set was merely suffering from engine problems. Upon tear down of the generator it was revealed that Rotor winding were rubbing on stator from improper winding process from Yanmars generator assembly plant in Japan. Windings were at the same levels or protruding past the base of the magnet fields. the windings eveually rubbed and ground off. (they literally melted to stator) I did purchase new rotor which revealed the proper tight winding process. This generator was doomed to fail from day one. It operated at total of 16 hours. I am concerned that other generators are out there with similar dangerous windings. I also feel lucky that I noticed condition before catastrophe struck. By winding rubbing on stator it caused generator to go into a series overload condition, burning muffler and shooting flames. I attempted to notify Yanmar of condition but they did not appear interested in studying defective rotor. I have documneted process with pictures and have also saved unsafe rotor for verification.
