The product, in the report: Generac Standby Generator model 004916-0
Generac Automatic standby generator 10 KW model 004916-0. Generator start battery blew up, fortunately there was no collateral damage or injuries.
The cause of the explosion excessive charging voltage. Lead acid batteries should charge at about 13.5 volts. The charger on this unit provides 14 volts DC.
When lead acid batteries were not sealed, this was not a huge problem, as water could be periodically added to low cells in order to compensate for slight overcharging. Now because of current safety regulations, batteries are sealed and they will eventually explode if overcharged.
A search of the web shows that this is a common problem for some Generac generators.
