The product, in the report: Cummins 18 kw home standby generator. Operates on natural gas
After hurricane Ida carbon monoxide levels in my house set off my CO detectors. The fire dept came to my house and ventilated it. It took them about 1/2 hour to get CO level back to normal. The source of the CO was my home standby generator which had been running for several days. The morning had no wind to help dissipate the exhaust from generator. Note the generator is about 26 feet from my house and about 12 feet from my patio cover. One factor that should be considered that I have not heard about is the orientation of the generator. While my generator certainly met code for the required distance from house, the unit was placed with the exhaust pointing toward the house. The unit is air cooled and the cooling air mixed with exhaust is emitted with great force. When generator is running, the fumes can be easily detected under the patio. I believe that if the generator had been installed with the exhaust pointed away from the house, the chance of CO exhaust entering my house would have been greatly reduced.
