The product, in the report: Cummins Onan Portable Generator
Purchased a Cummins Onan Portable Generator on 8/31/11 and when preparing for hurricane Sandy started it up and it was spewing gasoline and there was gasoline in the oil. I immediately shut it off and went to the Cummins website and it was there that I saw a recall notice. This unit’s model and serial numbers was one of the recalled generators. Immediately I contacted Cummins and asked for a refund as published in the recall alert. After communication about having one of their units, they are refusing to provide a refund and are saying this unit was “campaigned at the factory” because it displays an “R” on the unit. I was sold this unit as new and there was no disclosure that this unit was previously repaired because of a pre-existing defect. Cummins wants me to bring the unit to their facility and have it analyzed and repaired. If the first repair did not fix the defect, what is to say the second repair will correct the condition. In good conscious I cannot use this unit nor can I sell it to someone else. Cummins should honor their remedy posted in their recall so I can purchased a unit that is not defective and does not cause a risk to my personal property or life of my family. How many other consumers are out there that may have this unit with an “R” on it and not realize that it was manufactured with a defect, repaired and put back on the market as a new unit with no disclosure? I was never contacted by anyone about this unit being recalled.
