Death Made Apr 17, 2023, sent to the company May 3, 2023, published by CPSC May 17, 2023
The product, in the report: A Champion 2500-Watts portable gas operated generator/inverter
A 35 year-old male was discovered deceased, kneeling and slumped over in the rear section of his parked cargo van upon a well-being status check by his employer after requested by his family. Per investigation with the local Sheriff’s Office, a portable gasoline operated generator/inverter connected to a portable rice cooker and a portable electric heater were also in the rear of the enclosed van with an obvious strong odor of exhaust inside the van. There was no obvious external evidence of injury upon preliminary inspection but significant “cherry red” lividity present concerning for carbon monoxide toxicity which was later confirmed by laboratory findings. By inspection, the cargo van was ruled out as the source of the CO toxicity. Per medical examiner examination and laboratory testing, the cause of death was ruled as Carbon monoxide inhalation [with improper use of a gas generator in enclosed space (van)] and the manner of death was rule as an accident.

The product, in the report: This is a 2500 Watt portable inverter Generator yellow and black suitcase style that weighs 39 lbs.
We have a Champion Generator 2500 W model # 200951 Serial # 2009051500606 that is only a year old we bought for our trailer and it would not run and has a 3 year warranty on it but we found out the ignition coil was bad so we got the part from Champion then when he took it apart he saw that the carburetor was leaking a ton of gas so he tore it off to check it out and found that the screw had no thread so it wouldn’t lock in and the company is giving me stress about fixing it. My mechanic said it could have started a seroius fire and burned everything around our trailer down!!

I’m a [REDACTED] master technician and knew this wasn’t safe. I was confident champion power equipment fixed the problem with leaking fuel from a new generator. On Aug 2018, the 4th use...explosion from generator from leaking gas while running. I suffered 3 degree burns, I had to learn how to walk again over this generator. The owner has told me this was my fault....I work on engines for a living. I know the safety precautions neededto operate a generator. Please help me take this unsafe generator off the store shelves.

No one hurt Made Dec 28, 2018, sent to the company Feb 19, 2019, published by CPSC Mar 6, 2019
The product, in the report: Champion 5 KW generator purchased from Costco.
We purchased a 5KW gasoline generator from Costco about 5 years ago. The generator was used when the power was lost to our home. It was housed in a 4’ x 5’ wooden shed build specifically for the generator. It was located about 12’ from the house.
The power went out on Dec 14 at about 8:30 pm. The generator was started and about 45 minutes later my wife heard a load explosion and the house went dark. She looked out the window and the saw the generator and the shed in flames. The fire dept was called and they put the fire out. The shed and the generator were a complete lost. The fire was hot enough that it cracked a window in our house.

No one hurt Made Feb 2, 2015, sent to the company Jul 27, 2015, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2015
The product, in the report: 7,000 Watt Portable, 6,000 Running Watt Generator
01/31/2015 The consumer went out and started her new generator. She filled it with approximately five gallons of fuel and proceeded to started. The consumer then went inside her home. Approximately five minutes later, she came out to check on the generator and noticed there was a fuel circle with an approximate diameter of four feet. The consumer proceeded to turn off the generator immediately, as well as the gas lever.
The consumer did not bother inspecting the unit to see where the leakage was from as she does not know much about these products.
The consumer indicates this is the first time she ever used her generator, having started it on a few occasions before. The consumer states that the few times she started her generator, she turned it off immediately and therefore does not know if it leaked fuel then.
02/02/2015 The consumer contacted the manufacturer and informed them what happened. The representative she spoke, [REDACTED], to informed her that she would be receiving an e-mail with instructions as to how to proceed fixing the unit. The representative offered to walk the consumer through the steps of finding out what is wrong but the consumer denied the offer.
The consumer checked her e-mail and came upon Carburetor Check Sheet, Fuel Flow Test and Carburetor Check Service Procedures, How to Cure a Carburetor that is Flooding Fuel. The consumer indicates that because she has no mechanical skills/ knowledge, she will have a family member follow the instructions to see if it would solve the issue.
The consumer indicates that she paid approximately seven hundred dollars for her unit. The consumer has no injuries to report. The consumer does not plan on contacting the retailer. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard.
Champion sent the consumer a new carborator.

No one hurt Made Dec 7, 2013, sent to the company Dec 16, 2013, published by CPSC Dec 31, 2013
The product, in the report: The Champion Power Equipment 41532 gasoline powered, electric start portable generator is powered by a 439cc Champion single cylinder, 4-stroke OHV engine that produces 7000 running watts and 9000 starting watts. With a 5.9 gal. fuel tank this unit can run up to 8 hours at 50% load. Our OHV engine is equipped with a low oil shut-off sensor and designed for long life and easy maintenance. This unit is ideal for large RV’s, trailers, power tools, jobs around the house, or home back-up power during emergencies.
I have a 9000 KW Champion portable generator purchased about a year ago.
I try to run it regularly for maintenance, and last week I had trouble getting it started. Finally it started, but with difficulty, and ran very rough. I let it run, went inside the house, and a few minutes later it was making so much noise I looked out the window and flames were shooting out of the exhaust! I ran out, and with much trepidation (it was very scary looking!), turned it off. I called Champion and they said it sounded like a carburator. They said they would send me a new one and if I could transport it to an approved dealer, would cover labor. Well, it would probably cost me a few hundred dollars to get someone to come here with a truck, load it, drive it to Norwalk CT (I am in West Redding - about 1 hr away) and then go pick it up again! They said it was up to me to either cover the cost of delivery and pickup or to install it myself! I then googled the problem and found that they had recalled a number of their generators for faulty carborators causing fire - just like mine! I emailed them and they said that mine was NOT included in the recall, and thus, they would not cover the cost of having the repair transport. What am I supposed to do?! I’m 64, disabled woman, 5’2” tall and arthritic hands!

The product, in the report: Champion Generator
Leaking gas profusely. The thing is virtually brand new. I have pulled it out and started it every three months and let it run for 10 minutes. It has never been used other than the testing every three months. I started it up recently and noticed that gas was leaking at a fast pace, unsure of exactly where the gas is leaking from.

The product, in the report: 6000 watt portable generator
I purchased a portable generator by Champion Power Equipment, model #41311, at Costco. I am experiencing fuel leaking from the carburetor after the unit has been shutdown by turning off the ignition key and then immediately turning off the gas line control. This is the same problem reported in CPSC’s Release #13-026 for model #s 41332 and 41532.
Note: I do not experience fuel leaking from the carburetor if I first turn off the gas line control and let the unit shutdown itself down a few minutes later when it’s out of gas. There’s nothing in the instruction set which addresses this problem.
