Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 5, 2013, sent to the company Feb 13, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 28, 2013

The product, in the report: 5000 Watt, 6250 Surge Wattage Generator

I have a Centurion (Generac) 5000 Watt Generator. It was purchased in January 2011. Every month I run it for 15 minutes to test functionality, then shut the fuel valve off and run the carburetor out of fuel.

On February 4, 2013 I started my monthly run when fuel began POURING out of the backside of the carburetor and air filter. I quickly shut the generator and fuel supply off. The unit is out of warranty so I investigated by disassembling the carburetor. The needle valve for fuel supply was stuck open because the plating on the valve had “flaked off” (see picture). I will probably have to buy a [REDACTED] needle valve, since what I’ve seen on the internet indicates this has been cloned off of them. Theirs is made entirely of thermoplastic.

I always use fuel with <5% Ethanol and add [REDACTED] to the fuel supply. This is a very dangerous situation, especially when this piece of equipment is left unattended. There could be a major fuel spill and ignition.

Made Jun 20, 2012, sent to the company Jun 27, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 12, 2012

The product, in the report: A Centurion model of a Generac generator (7000 watts). The serial number of Centurion unit is 4097635. The item (model) number is 0046793.

A Centurion model of a Generac generator (7000 watts) was installed in late 2005. A car battery was needed in order to exercise the generator on a weekly basis. Approximately two years later the car battery exploded. The auto supply store replaced the battery at no cost. We thought it was a bad battery. In May 2007, we called a generator service company, Wooldridge Heating, Air, and Electrical, from Lynchburg, VA to service the generator on a routine basis. The second battery exploded in May 2010. Wooldridge installed a new battery, and continued to service the equipment once per year. The last service call was in December 2011.

The third battery exploded today, 06/20/2012. The service technician from Wooldridge called Generac to report the incident. He was told that the generator’s battery charger was “too heavy” for this unit. They gave him a replacement part number for a more appropriate battery charger. They informed him that there had not been a recall on this item, although they were familiar with the problem and had obviously come up with a fix. They informed him that I would be responsible for replacing the battery and battery charger. I believe Generac should be made responsible for selling a faulty product with an obvious safety hazard and for compensating owners for the expense of replacing batteries and faulty parts.

Why do I think this is a safety hazard? Because the battery blew up in my face when I turned the generator on! I was not injured simply because the battery was beneath the control panel, but I did suffer temporary hearing loss, and for the third time I was forced to clean up the battery electrolyte, which again caused damage to the concrete pad the generator sits on.

The serial number of Centurion unit is 4097635. The item (model) number is 0046793. The part number for the replacement battery charger is OJ77030SRV.

  4. No one hurt

Made Jul 13, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 4, 2011

The product, in the report: 3250 watt portable electric generator.

I purchased a portable 3250 watt generator on April 12 2011 from Mr Sparky (704 435-3060). I store the unit in a small barn away from my house. When I went to pull it out to run it a little on July 10 2011 I found that the gas cut-off valve/tank connection had broken free from the tank completely and all gas has drained from the tank. Fortunately I had only a little gas in it to leak out. But it holds up to 4 gallons which would have caused a very dangerous situation and could have lead to a major disaster. I have contacted the company that sold it to me. No response yet. I have asked to return/refund as to the seriousness to a safety issue that I would never feel comfortable with a Generac product that has such a defect in materials used. I have pictures if there is someone I may send them to.

I have also contacted the manufacturer and have not been contacted according to their response: From: customersupport@generac.com <customersupport@generac.com> Subject: Thank you from Generac To: [REDACTED] Date: Sunday, July 10, 2011, 12:47 PM Thank you for your request.
