The product, in the report: Briggs & Stratton 18KW Natural Gas Whole Home Generator Series 18000

in response to [REDACTED], press secretary for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission following her inclusion in the investigative report done by our local news station, [REDACTED] (see link) in reply & regards to Whole Home Generator Safety following Hurricane Ida [REDACTED] Due to the placement of our whole home generator, and after running for more than a week following Hurricane Ida, dangerous carbon monoxide levels were detected in our home. It caused our temporary Carbon Monoxide Detector to sound the alarm at 1am on September 7, 2021. We called 911, the fire department came out . Unsafe levels were detected throughout the home, we were told to exit the home and they had to air out the whole home ad shut down the generator. Had the alarm not sounded, we likely would have died that night from carbon monoxide poisoning. A further problem is that our HOA is strict about the placement of electrical equipment on a property like ours but, I strongly feel life-safety is far more critical and more important. I would be more than willing to discuss our specific incident in more detail.

The product, in the report: Briggs and Stratton Whole House Standby Generator. Model #040517-00, Serial Number 400061011. equipped/powered by Briggs and Stratton Vanguard Natural Gas engine. Model #3895750006E1, Serial Number 1902214402710 UPC 011675405175

Briggs and Stratton whole house standby generator #040517-00, Vanguard engine #38957-50006E-1. unit had oil fill dipstick self unscrew from fill tube while running. this allowed over 20 ounces of engine oil to blow out onto the engine and exhaust system. possible fire hazard. also oil continued onto ground causing contamination of earth. As this system is, by design, run unattended, this possible fire hazard due to oil dipstick unscrewing and coating engine in oil is troubling

The product, in the report: Gasoline Powered 4000 Watt Generator

I bought a Briggs & Stratton Portable 4000 watt Generator Model # 030319 Serial number # 101363666 in 2006, and started it up about every 3 months to do whatever maintenance was required, and to make sure it worked properly in case of an emergency situation. In October 6, 2011 when I started the Generator, I noticed it was leaking gasoline from the plastic (4) gallon gasoline tank, I turned it off and discovered the gasoline tank had a crack at one of the (4) holes where it bolted to the generator frame. I drained the gas tank and removed it from the frame and discovered the mounting holes of the gasoline tank did not line up with the holes on the Generator frame. It appears that the people at the factory forced the bolt through the gas tank into the frame and thus withing (4 + ) years caused a stress crack in the Gasoline tank at the bolt location that would not align. The Generator has a total of approximately (5) hours run time since I purchased it. I called Briggs & Stratton and was told to take it to Harvester Small Engine Repair which I did on October 10, 2011. The location of the repair shop is 1430 Jungs Station Road Saint Charles, Missouri Telephone Number 636-441-6116. The manager: [REDACTED] called me on Monday October 17 and told me he talked to their Briggs * Stratton area Representative and was told, without him even looking at the problem they would not pay to have this safety problem repaired. I believe this to be a very serious Safety Problem. If I had just started the Generator and walked off and let it run without seeing the leak it could have been a disaster, with possible loss of life and or property. I have pictures of the alignment problem if needed The repair cost to have this repaired will be between $150-$200
