The product, in the report: Black Max Generator Item # BM907500BT MFG#090930345 Ser # KC18292D060010

Purchased last Monday Oct 8 at Sam’s club. Put into service wend Oct 10/2018 3pm. With breaks every 8-10 hrs off 4-5 hrs per day. Added oil at 85 hrs. Never has had gas spilled on any part of it. Had just topped off the gas tank and restarted it. Prior to shutting off had been running 6 hrs. Restarted it and left alone monitoring from inside went outside 2 hrs later and found the tire completely burned up with an ash ring about 18 inches around tire were grass had burned. How it did not cause the gas tank to explode just a couple of inches above the tire, I have no idea. lucky the fire did not spread more than it did. I contacted the company and forwarded them all this info but I’ve not heard anything from them in over one week other than it was passed to the right department. The product, in the report: Portable Generator The original manufacturer was the Power Mate Corporation. 4970 Airport Road P.O. Box 6001 Kearney, NE 68848 - 1-800-445-1805. This was owned by Coleman, the parent company. The company who purchased Power Mate uses the same address & phone number & name for their generators. The consumer called the 800 number. They said they had a new bushing to replace the leaking one, and that it was made of a different composite material. There are many of these generators in the consumer’s hands that have a potential to leak gas on a hot motor while it is running or after the motor is stopped before the engine cools! Perhaps no one has had a fire but it is certainly likely! It would be wise to alert the owners of Power Mate generators who have the rubber bushing in the bottom of their gas tanks to be vigilant or they could have a leak that could cause a fire! Power Mate Black Max

Caller stated that he smelled a gas odor and discovered that the fuel tank had a leak about 1 week ago after filling the tank. He had not used the unit over a year and the tank was empty during that time.

The manufacturer was contacted but another company had purchased it and they informed him that they had a new compound that would prevent it from leaking, that he could purchase. He feels that the new company should provide him a replacement bushing for tank. He is concerned that the generator is a fire hazard and should be reported.

The product is not affected by a recall.

On the website the parts listed to replace the leaking bushings fits 89 models of generators! What if there are that many models in the consumer’s hands that have the old rubber bushing that has a history of leaking? When the consumer called the 800 number the salesperson knew exactly what the consumer’s problem was & how to replace the part. The company is certainly aware of this problem!
