The product, in the report: Jensen desk: - 56”w x 28”d x 30” - (from website) Solid eucalyptus frame. Covered in an Acorn stain. Clear tempered glass top. Made in Vietnam.

The tempered glass top from a Jensen desk purchased online at westelm.com in 2022 spontaneously shattered, causing damage to computer equipment on and around the desk and the hardwood floors below it. Desk was used as an office desk with a couple of computer monitors placed on it (well under the listed weight capacity). No humans were injured as they were not in the room at the time, but a pet cat sustained a cut to their paw from a broken glass shard.

The product, in the report: Product Name: West Elm Jensen Desk (56”) Solid eucalyptus frame, with acorn stain. Clear tempered glass top. 56”w x 28”d x 30”h

Incident Description At approximately 4:00 a.m., we were awoken by the sudden sound of glass breaking. Upon inspection, we discovered that the glass top of our West Elm Jensen Desk (56”) had completely shattered across the room. The glass continued to emit popping and fizzing sounds when we entered. There was no impact to the desk or surrounding area, leading us to conclude that the glass top spontaneously shattered. The desk was not in use at the time of the incident. As a result, my husband sustained several minor lacerations on his hands and feet while attempting to clear the broken glass.

The product, in the report: West Elm Jensen Desk (56”), Solid eucalyptus frame with a clear tempered glass top. #3210257 56”w x 28”d x 30”h

This is to report the West Elm Jensen Desk (West Elm Jensen rectangular glass table). I own this desk, and its glass top spontaneously shattered around 7pm PST on Sunday, July 13, 2025 at my home. No one was in the room (thankfully) at the time and no other items hit or fell onto the desk. It just spontaneously shattered for no apparent reason with glass exploding all over the room and the few items on top of the desk (1 desk lamp, 1 computer monitor, 2 computer speakers, a keyboard, mouse, small plant and drink coaster) collapsing onto the floor. Fortunately, while my husband, dog and I were home, we were not in the room where the desk is located in our house it could have been extremely dangerous and injurious should we have been using the desk at the time, which we often do. We were very lucky! Upon research, I found that this West Elm Jensen desk has had a CPSC safety recall in the past (#18-724), but the timeframe for the recall states “from September 2014 through December 2016”, BUT I purchased my desk from WestElm.com in September 2020. When I called the Safety Recall number, I was transferred to their regular customer service team and they had no knowledge of the recall and kept insisting they could not help me because I purchased the desk more than 1 year ago. Once I pressed the team more, informing them of the recall and providing them photos of my shattered desk, the representative told me that their supervisor finally admitted they had seen at least 3 other instances of this glass shattering happening to other customers recently and that “West Elm should state on their website that this desk should not be placed next to a window”. Based on my experience, and what their customer service team said, the safety recall should really extend past the 2016 date stated as this desk if VERY dangerous. Especially considering that the recall remedy is a glass replacement but all of this indicates that the glass problem has not been fixed and those glass tops issued after 2016 still spontaneously shatter. Additionally, in my conversation with the West Elm team, it took 30 minutes of disputing to get them to rectify the situation, with an initial offer of replacing the glass, but I wasn’t willing to risk receiving another defective glass top that could also spontaneously shatter again (and potentially next time hurt someone in my home). The representative told me that the only way to know if the glass was fixed (and would not shatter again) was to find out for myself once I had the new glass top, so essentially, she was saying I should risk seeing if it might shatter again. The whole experience was excruciatingly disappointing. In the end after an hour phone call and lots of insisting, West Elm provided me with a merchandise credit for the desk. So they provided a solution (not one I’m 100% happy with), but it took a lot of time and effort, and yet they never seemed to take the glass shattering issue as a bigger problem and that concerns me especially since the Jensen desk is still being sold on their site, their customer service team is automatically reverting to sending a glass replacement while admitting that the shattering problem has been an issue among customers. This is a very dangerous practice and I’m shocked a big company like West Elm is functioning this way.

The product, in the report: West Elm Jensen rectangular glass table. This was previously recalled but there is not current recall notice. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2018/West-Elm-Recalls-Glass-Tables-Due-to-Risk-of-Injury-Recall-Alert

The tempered glass on top of my Jensen desk, purchased from West Elm in 2021, unexpectedly shattered. Thankfully, no one was in the room when this happened and nothing but papers and books were on the desk at the time.
