The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Cedar Hope Chest

My 9 year old son accidentally locked himself into our Lane cedar hope chest this morning and was trapped inside for approximately an hour. The locking mechanism locks from the outside with no way to open the chest from the inside and it is airtight. When I found him his face was riddled with broken blood vessels (Petechiae) from what I was told by a medical professional was most likely due to lack of oxygen.

The product, in the report: Lane cedar chest

Recently heard of the recall regarding the latches on Lane cedar chests. We have a cedar chest that we purchased new in 1983 from Wickes Furniture Store in Minneapolis, MN. We only recently became aware of the recall as a result of the television show “Inside Edition”.

The serial number and style number on the bottom of our chest were poorly stenciled onto the bottom so we cannot identify the exact style. We sent photos of the chest to Lane along with the purchase date so they could identify it and received a reply that our chest is a newer one and is okay. (The recall is for chests manufactured from 1908 to 1987 and since we purchased it in 1983, it obviously was manufactured before 1987 and is within the recall. The top on ours does latch automatically when the chest is closed. I communicated and spoke with numerous people at Lane, including a Supervisor named [REDACTED] about the problem. She is going to check further tomorrow (Mar 12, 2014) but am sending this notice to make you aware that other consumers may have been told that their cedar chest lock is safe when it is in fact not safe at all. There needs to be a thorough review of the entire recall effort and any consumer that was told their chest was safe, needs to recheck it. The original recall contained an explanation of how to test the chest but the new recall does not contain that. This is still a dangerous situation.
