The product, in the report: Disney Fairy Chest dimensions: 36L x 18W x 56H Model Number for Rooms To Go where it was purchased 34381018
I purchased a Disney Fairy Bedroom suit from Rooms to Go in Greenville, SC. The chest has fallen over 3 times. The first time it fell on my 4 year old granddaughter, the only thing that saved her from injury is that it hit another piece of furniture in her room and kept it from going all the way to the floor. She was able to crawl out from under the chest. The second time it fell over I was putting clothes away in the drawers and caught it and was able to push it back up. The third time I pulled the chest away from the wall to sweep behind it, the drawers came open and it tipped and fell and again it hit the bed and the entertainment center, so it kept it from hitting the floor. I called reported to Rooms To Go in Greenville the incidents and they siad to call and report this to thier Customer Service department. I called and was told by [REDACTED] that there had been complaints of this happening and that it had been fixed and they would send a service representative out to the house to look at the chest and see if I had the correct piece. She asked me if when the furniture had been delivered if they had informed me that the chest needed to be anchored to the wall and if a wire had been delived with it. The answer was no to both of these questions. The people who delivered the furniture spoke only broken english. The service rep came out to the house and I asked him if the Fix for the problem was anchoring the piece to the wall with a wire and he said yes. But that it was up to the buyer to do this. This chest will tip over 100% of the time if the bottom 3 drawers are open and you go to open the fourth drawer. This is a child’s piece of furniture and is marketed for children. It is unsafe. The design of the chest lends it to tipping over because it is narrower at the bottom and wider at the top. The answer that I get from the company is that all chests tip over when the drawers are opened. I have never owned a chest that has tipped over, even with all drawers opened. This one tips over when all drawers are empty. The drawers have metal sliding mechanism to open them very easily, which also makes them very easy for a child to open them. You cannot tell a young child to only open one drawer at a time. At no time, in the show room or at delivery were we ever informed that it would be necessary to secure this piece of furniture to the wall, nor did we receive any paperwork where it was stated that this was important to do. Again 100% of the time, this chest will tip over. It is very heavy and if this chest had fallen on my granddaughter without having been stopped by another piece of furniture, I know without a doubt that she would have sustained a serious injury and possible death. I am a [REDACTED] and have worked with the Greenville Hospital System for the past 36 years and take this very seriously. We have a duty to protect our children and I am deeply concerned that this chest is being marketed for children to be placed where they will be using it. My granddaughter is at the independent stage and wants to dress herself. We have removed all of her clothes from this chest to keep her from going to it and we are requesting from the company that they come and take the chest back because it is unsafe. Even if they tell the consumer that it should be anchored and it is up to the consumer to do so, not everyone is going to do that or have the ability or know how to do it. The chest is so heavy that if anchored to the drywall it would probably pull free, it would have to be anchored to a stud and it would need to be done correctly. The customer service department of this company only tells me that anyone should know that all chests should be anchored to the wall. They have been slow in responding and I am receiving conflicting information depending on who I speak with. I have asked to speak with a supervisor and was informed that she had 48 to 72 hours to return my call. The three times I have called and asked to speak with her I am told she is unavailable. It does not seem to matter to them that this is a safety issue. Also, not all configurations of a room lend it to placing a chest against a wall to be anchored. Our chest is placed under a window because that is the only place for it. Again, this chest is unsafe and has a high risk of causing injury or death. This chest should not be on the market to be placed in a child’s room and place that child under significantly high risk of injury or death. I am disappointed that the retailer has been so uncooperative, especially as it was their customer service department that informed me that they already knew of the risk of this chest falling over and had put a FIX in place. Whether that was the retailer or the manufactuer I do not know. Their disregard for safety is unacceptable.
