The product, in the report: Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver
The receiver, which had previously been serviced under warranty by the manufacturer’s authorized service center, exhibited issues that cause me to doubt the build quality of my unit. That, along with reports I was able to find online of 5 other users that experienced similar issues (2 with reports here), cause me to doubt the build quality of the product. The unit made a loud bang (equal in intensity to small arms fire) and then shot flames from the top grille of the unit for 20-30 seconds. This unit has been operated in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, on top of an open stand, open to air circulation on all sides and back (nothing to the top, sides, or front, 8” clearance to the back).
I have contacted the manufacturer and they are going to have one of their engineers evaluate the unit.
