The product, in the report: Sony kdl-40v2500 HD Television.
Sony kdl-40v2500 television developed an internal electrical fault that caused coax cable to melt. Approx. one week ago, cable stopped working to the TV. The cable box was replaced with a new one and problem continued. Next, I went to examine the current coax cable leading to the cable box. I found that behind the wall plate, the coax was completely melted. I also found the coax completely melted in the crawl space of my house where the cable runs. I ran a new coax cable line. Upon running the line I connected the HDMI cable from the cable box to the Sony TV. The TV was not plugged into power during this step but the cable box was. As soon as I touched the new coax cable connector to the cable box, the connection arced, burned the terminal and I received a shock. This step also caused the circuit breaker to trip in the house. Next, I attached a separate TV to the same setup mentioned and it operated fine. Next, I retried the Sony TV using the coax cable connector option (not the HDMI connection). As soon as the coax was connected, again with the Sony TV unplugged, the coax started to smoke and again, the circuit breaker tripped. Based on my observations of the cable melting behind the wall plate as well as in the crawl space, the fault that this Sony TV has developed poses a significant risk of fire.

The product, in the report: 40” Televisions
This caller purchased a 40” television from a warehouse sale on October 20, 2016 then discovered there was a crack in the picture tube. He tried to exchange the tv but the manufacturer refused the first few times but then exchanged it for the one being complaining about in this incident report. The product, in the report: Sony television KDF-70XBR950
I have a optical block lamp overheating issue for a Sony television, model number KDF-70XBR950. I purchased the television Oct 2004 and recently came across the lamp overheating issue due to picture distortion. I contacted Sony Customer Support and they have no record of any recall for my model television. However, according the website (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/lamp-overheating-issue), Sony did extend the warranty coverage of the XBR950 televisions. I did verify signs of overheating per the above website. These signs were in addition to the color distortions in the picture.

The product, in the report: 42 inch wega television
Sony KF-42WE610 lcd television was purchased back in 2004. Television had not been used much until lately when I put it in kids play room. When my child came to me and said “dad the tv smell funny and is really hot.” Upon inspection I found the lamp door access was melted. The television was extremely hot on exterior of access panel. Investigating the problem online I found there was a lawsuit and a recall. But found that it did not pose a safety threat. From my perspective it poses a serious threat and should have tracked down every owner of these models. I would never knowingly put a television in a room with children that could possibly start fire or burn my child. I called Sony and told them the specifics and they gave me a number to a local repair company. Unacceptable.

The product, in the report: Sony 60” Grand Wega System HD TV
TV Lamp door and dual connectors burned and melted. I discovered the damage after smoke and fire alarm going off. I tried to replace the lamp with a new one but could not get the wiring to connect since the connection box in the TV melted and won’t hold wires in place for connection to the lamp. There isn’t any slack in the wires to try to individually connect each wire. I talked to Sony and they sent a guy to look at it. Nothing has been addressed. I’m thinking about trying to solder any extension wire between the hookups. Totally frustrated that I spent all the money on this TV and also replaced bulbs 5-6 times.

Death Made Dec 10, 2013, sent to the company Dec 18, 2013, published by CPSC Jan 3, 2014
The product, in the report: 40” Sony Trinitron box television, estimated weight 100lbs plus, measurements L39”xH30”xD25” silver and black in color
Inside the living room of the decedent’s home was a large wooden entertainment center cabinet with a large hole in the middle for a television. On the carpeted floor in front of the entertainment center was a large, approximately 40” Sony Trinitron box television. The television was estimated to weigh approximately 100lbs plus. The televisions measurements were L39”xH30”xD25”. The television was damaged on the top and the side with cracks and missing parts. A piece of the missing part, which fit into the side of the television had small droplets of blood on it. There was dried blood noted on the top front part of the television. There was what appeared to be multiple finger prints noted on the top of the television. A blood stain was noted on the carpet next to the T.V. Blood droplets were noted inside the hallway towards the kitchen/dining area. Measurements for the opening for the television from the back wall to the front shelf edge was 22”. The decedent was a 2 year old that appeared to have suffered head trauma when a large 40” boxed television fell on top of her. The decedent was playing in front of the T.V with a 4 year old when apparently the 4 year old bumped the T.V causing it to fall off the shelf. Measurements of the shelf and space from the back wall to the front edge of the T.V stand appeared to be smaller than the T.V’s depth.

The product, in the report: This is a 50” rear projection Sony television.
I have a Sony KDF50WE655 50” rear projection TV. The lamp access door is melted and browned from an overheated bulb. I have read numerous issues about this and have had this problem for the past 5 years. In fact, it causes bulbs to burn out more frequently than they should.
Please force Sony into doing a recall for this. There is a burned plastic smell that fills the room and this is DANGEROUS....THERE IS NO WAY THAT IT IS SAFE!!!
My wife is due with our first child in November. We would like Sony to issue us a credit or to give us a swap of a working TV.
I can take pictures. This TV is going to be put in the trash...what a shame!!

Sony KF-42WE610 TV stopped working-- ordered replacement bulb-- opened housing to find housing was melted all around lamp-- Called Sony and was told that they would send someone to fix the tv at no cost-- Goven reference number: [REDACTED]---- Sony then called back from 239-245-6245 to inform me that they would not fix the TV but would credit $99 on a $599 Sony set if I bought through them. (TV was approximately $3400 new) Concern is that the melting could have caused fire and further damage as it melted a section of the TV stand as well (noticed when moved to replace bulb).

The product, in the report: SONY Grand WEGA MODEL KF-50WE610
I purchased a Sony WEGA Model KF-50WE610 TV on 10/27/2003. I have had to replace the projection bulb a few time over the years. I just had to replace the bulb again and when I removed the protective cover it wouldnt come out. It welded itself the plastic to the entry hole plastic. When I finally got it out and replace the bulb and but everything back together we started to smell plastic burning or getting hot. I did some research on line and found out that SONY had a recall on this problem. I never received a recall notice. Im afraid to use this TV now if it might catch on fife.
What can I do to get this TV problem fixed? I paid almost $3000 for this set.

The product, in the report: Over heated LAMP housing causing cracks, melting and warping as well as damage to lamp.
I purchased a Sony 50” TV model #KF50WE610 from “The Good Guys” in Santa Clarita, CA in July of 2004. I had the TV serviced through the extended service plan in July 2009 by SoCal Tech, Inc (818) 505-8500. They determined that the motherboard was damaged as well as the LAMP and both were replaced under extended service plan warranty. Fast forward to September 2012, the TV stop functioning and needs service again. Upon removing the front trim cover, I noticed that the lamp cover was burnt, melted and deformed. After removing the lamp, I also saw that the internal housing was also cracked, melted and separating from the intense heat. I registered my TV when I purchased it and I should have been notified of these safety recalls. Had I’ve been notified, I would have taken the necessary step to fix the TV in order to avoid extra damages. I enjoy using my TV and just want it fix under the extended warranty recalls that that were issued but not notified of. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

The product, in the report: Model KF-50WE610 Sony WEGA LCD Projection TV 2004 series 50”
In March 2011, my Sony KF-50WE610 LCD Projection TV stopped working. When investigated further the lamp signal was flashing and so I purchased the replacement lamp through Amazon.com and waited to install it. I used the instruction manual to remove the front panel and when I got to the burnt lamp noticed a high amount of heat damage due to the lamp blowing. I didn’t consider it a huge issue because once the new lamp was placed and the tv put back together the tv seemed to work fine.
Today after noticing the TV not working again due to the same error, I searched and found this article online. https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/lamp-overheating-issue. My version is a 2004 version and before I go an spend another $200 to replace another lamp or $500 to replace the entire television, I would like to see what can be done.
I am frustrated because since the first problem with the TV in March 2011 I did register with Sony to be made aware of any other issues with the WEGA tvs and heard nothing about this until I found this today. The last thing I want to do is replace the lamp on a TV that is going to continue to overheat and perhaps do something worse like catch fire to my home and other priceless non-replaceable items.

Same issue as recorded by author [REDACTED] Link below:

The issue in my case does not include melting of the lamp door. But the housing around the lamp is melted beyond repair. The hardened plastic has become brittle and not allowing the lamp to make a true connection (likely arching). The Ballast wires to the lamp have hardened and exposed copper (less than a half inch apart). The lamp is not replaceable due to extensive warping
Apparently, a recall/warranty existed but I was not notifed of this. My registration card was submitted to Sony shortly after purchase.

I have a Sony KF-50WE610 LCD rear projection TV. Recently the bulb burnt. I tried replacing it and noticed that the door that covers the lamp is melting. I was smelling burnt plastic for a while not knowing where it was coming from until now. I am now hearing a buzzing like electric arc sound when the TV tries to power on. It will not come on. I know there was a recall for a certain time on theses TV’s and also there is a class action suit. I just wanted to report this as I now have no TV and this was an expensive TV when I bought it. I think it is a safety hazard.

The product, in the report: 60” Rear Projection HDTV
I have a Sony Wega 60” Rear Projection TV (model: FK-60WE610) which is experiencing a heat issue in the area of the lamp. This issue has been recognized by the TV manufacturer (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KF60WE610) and they have offered to repair the TV, but I don’t feel that replacing the melted lamp panel and the lamp will be making the TV any safer to operate as the cause of the heat damage is not corrected. I would rather replace with a new TV and Sony and I are trying to negotiate now on what they may offer me as compensation...probably nothing or next to nothing will be offered to me.
One concern is that there site recognizes my model TV that was manufactured in 2003, but my TV was made on June 2004 and exhibited the same issue that has now turned the screen bright green in color. So, I believe the issue may extend to more manufacturing years than what they are admitting publicly. There was no other indicators (smoke, smell, etc) that would have indicated to me that their was heat damage inside the TV and I don’t know the extent to how dangerous this could become (possible fire hazard is unknown).

I bought a SONY rear projection TV model # KDF-60XS955 back in 2005 and recently discovered severe melting in the lamp housing assembly. Contacted Sony and a technician was sent to my house to evaluate the damaged. After the Tech confirmed the damaged Sony offered for me to buy their newer model at a discounted price.
I made this report because I believe this product has to be recalled. I have seen a lot of consumers with similar problems on other related models with same 3LCD Technology that only confirmed this product failed to pass its basic function.

No one hurt Made Dec 21, 2011, sent to the company Dec 30, 2011, published by CPSC Jan 17, 2012
The product, in the report: Sony 60” LCD Rear Projection Television - Model #KDF60XBR950
I purchased a Sony Rear Projection Television in 2003, a Sony KDF60XBR950. It was their top of the line TV that I was assured I would never have to replace, only purchase a new lamp in the future when the lamp “wore out.” About 3-4 years in I needed to replace a lamp in the unit, and one was replaced for me under my extended warranty that I purchased. When I replaced the lamp I noticed that the plastic door assembly seemed to be somewhat warped. But the salespeople at the location where I purchased the TV told me that it wasn’t an issue, only a lamp and “not to worry.” After my television was outside of the warranty period I began noticing that the lamp access door was warping further to the point where it would no longer stay in place, and the television would intermittently turn off and then back on. When I called the place where I purchased my television I was told that it was outside of the warranty period and that they couldn’t service the television and the closest television repair center for Sony was in Billings, MT - over 200 miles from my home.
I was told again to replace the lamp in my TV, which I did, and paid for retail out of my own pocket. At this point there was severe warping of the lamp access door but I was assured that Sony had been in contact with the specialty retailer and that there were no “problems” to worry about andthat it was simply from “letting the tv run too long during the summer” and not to worry. Roughly a year later another lamp burst inexplicably after watching sports on the tv for a few hours.
At this point in time I began to be concerned as I went to replace the lamp again (I’d purchased a couple of lamps as backups as it was cheaper to buy a lamp than another $6,000 television) and the door assembly was completely warped and would no longer fit on the front of the television and wouldn’t allow the TV to turn on any longer even after replacing the lamp. I examined the insides of the lamp assembly unit and there was significant warping and scorching from what looked to be excessive heat inside the unit. I checked online with Sony and there was no incidents reported on their website that were readily available for my particular unit. It wasn’t until I browsed around the Internet that I discovered I wasn’t alone and there were thousands of others who had the same problem with their televisions. One of the links from a forum about warped lamp doors on Sony TV’s said that Sony was going to extend a warranty out to cover this problem. I followed the link to Sony’s website and it spelled out that there were no known safety issues but that they would “repair” the television for free - see link (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?&news_id=261&mdl=KF60WE610)
Upon contacting Sony I was first told by a customer service agent that I would need to call someone and have the TV repaired myself, to which I responded that their website was contradicting their own statements. After several more phone calls a local TV repair center was contacted and they came to look at my television.
When the TV tech arrived he told me that he’d need to take apart the television to look for damage to the unit. Upon completing his inspection he told me that there was extensive heat damage to the unit, inside the television itself things were warped, there were wires that had overheated, melted and were burnt and the surrounding areas also showed heat damage issues. When I asked how such a thing could happen without so much as a safety email from Sony he said “they know that these things are dangerous, but they simply won’t admit to it because they will owe consumers millions in settlements.”
My television like many consumers is located in the middle of the house and next to my child’s bedroom. The repair tech stated on the phone and in person that “there have been incidents where these televisions and this problem have caused fires.” Yet I was never contacted to be warned that my TV could have overheated, and burnt down my house. I was told the only reason my entire television unit hadn’t burnt down or overheated completely and melted was that I kept it in a well ventilated area on a stand
At best this is simple oversight, at worst it’s criminal negligence on the part of Sony for not reporting clear safety hazards in their television units. Something should be done so that other customers whom haven’t experienced any outward signs of damage to their television aren’t caught by surprise when their televisions fail and possibly cause irreversible damage.

I own a Sony LCD Rear Projection TV. The Model # is KDF-50WE655 and it was manufactured November 2004. I noticed that there is a major problem where the Lamp for this TV melts the inside Plastics of the TV. This could have led to a fire, injury, or possible death in my household. I have looked up this problem on Google and have found that MANY people have reported the same exact problem and that Sony hasnt made any recalls or replacements. I wonder how many people decide to NOT REPORT this problem because I was about to just throw the TV in the trash because I would not like to chance my house burning down or someone possibly getting hurt. This seems to be a very serious issue, let alone a costly one for consumers. If there is anything I can do to get Sony to recall these Televisions, or at least let people know about this serious problem, let me know.

On Sunday September 4, 2011 I was woke up by my daughter 13 and the with the wall on my proch area where my Sony Bravia 36 inch flatscreen television purchased in 2008 was mounted was engulfed in flames. The TV was mounted in my screened porch area fully protected from any moisture or enviromnental issues. The fire department with South Walton Fire district was dispached per 911 and the fire was put out. After examination of the area the the television was plugged into a surge protector with only a small fan and small radio plugged in, no damage or fault was examined on the surge protector and it was not overloaded. The wall outlet had no other items pluged into it and the fire department could not determine any electrical fault issues or other components that could have led to the cause of the fire. The television was badly burned with components which exploded looking like small fuses on the floor. The fire department continued examine all components and were unable to make determination of what caused the fire and why the TV was damaged so badly. We had an electrician examine the outlet which was burned due to the fire but had no suggestion of failire in the the wall, the home was also inspected by Gulf Power which they cited no electrical problems comming into the home or in the homes wiring break in current ect. The cause of the fire was determined unknown and we had over $3500,00 in damages to the property. Photographs and fire report are availible for review. [REDACTED]. The product, in the report: LCD Projection Television 50”
I purchased a Sony KF-50WE620 LCD projection television in 2005. Recently I noticed a burning plastic odor, not realizing the odor was coming from my television I searched thehouse and found no cause. Approximately two weeks later the odor persisted untill finally while I was watching my television it suddenly went black. I consulted my owners manual and proceeded to inspect the lamp asssembly. I found that the protective lamp module cover had melted and some of the cover had actually dripped onto the lamp assembly. I removed the cover and found that I could not remove the lamp asssembly as the main housing that encloses the television screen had also melted and had formed around the lamp asembly. After considerable effort I was able to remove the lamp asssembly and found further heat related damage to componants close to the lamp including burned wiring insulation in the interior of the television. I have been in contact with Sony America Inc. and have recieved little information. Today their authorized service rep came to inspect the television. He advised that Sony technical service bulletin suggested no repair be made to the television given the heat related damage that had occured. I showed him the wiring insulation damage and he told me that the damaged insulation would eventually flake off resulting in exposed wiring and a potential fire hazard. Thankfully the lamp went out before teh television became overrheated causing a fire. I believe this issue is most asssuredly a fire hazard and needs to be adddressed by your office seeing that Sony Corp is taking no action to prevent possible catastrophic damage and possible loss of life due to this fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Sony Television KDF-50WE655 television set.
I have a Sony KDF-50WE655 TV that has evidence of lamp overheating. The lamp housing shows burn marks and has deformed the plastic. I guess I am fortunate that the lamp appears to have died before the TV could catch on fire.
