The product, in the report: COBY TFDVD170 Portable DVD Players With Built-in TV Tuner

Coby portable DVD Player / TV had been plugged into a wall electrical outlet in a bedroom for 2 days and was being used to play music CDs. Tonight, flames started violently spitting from the base setting off the fire alarms. The wall paint was burned, and thew fire would not be put out by blowing. I unplugged the Coby and brought it to the bathroom sink and doused it with water. After about 30 seconds, the fire was out, but there was smoke and burning bits of plastic trailing the path from the bedroom to the bathroom.

We never received a recall notice and are the original purchasers of the Coby device. Had someone been sleeping in the bedroom, serious injury or death could have occurred. Had no one been home, the spray of flame was so violent that the house could have burned down before the fire department would have arrived on site.

The product, in the report: Coby 32” TFTV3229 flatscreen television

My name is [REDACTED] and about 5+ years ago I purchased a Coby 32” flatscreen television from Abt Electronics. The exact model is #TFTV3229.

Over the weekend on Sunday, 02/18/2018 this television burst into flames and set fire to my bedroom home placing the lives of my 3 children, wife and myself in danger. If not for immediate action taken to remove the burning television by myself and the Rockville county fire department the entire home would’ve burned down. Now we have thousands of dollars of damages to our home that need repair and the traumatic experience of having a television set fire to our home. I would like to express my shock and outrage over a television that was sold to me which could burst into flames. I am only now aware that CobyUSA is out of business and that there was a recall of this television and no attempt was made by ABT electronics to contact me to ensure this dangerous television was removed. Can you please advise on how I might receive compensation for this incident?.

    REF: https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2013/thirteen-retailers-recall-32-coby-flat-screen-televisions

A claim has also been opened with our home insurance provider but I would also like to pursue compensatory damages from the retailer ABT Electronics where possible.

    kind regards, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Coby TFDVD1973 19” flat screen TV with built in DVD player

My Coby TFDVD1973 19 inch television set went up in flames this morning. I was fortunate that I wasn’t injured and my house didn’t burn down, but I have a lot of smoke damage. There was no power surge or any electrical system issue, all other electronics in the house are fine. The Coby TV, which was powered on, just made a lot of noise, started shooting up black smoke, and then lit up in flames. I just barely prevented the curtains from catching fire.

I know that Coby is out of business, but please warn people to replace these dangerous TV sets!!!

The product, in the report: 32 inch COBY LCD tv

I was watching a movie like any other night. The t.v. all of the sudden made a loud pop, kind of like a fire cracker. My screen changed colors, and went to red and gray stripes. I turned it off for a few and unplugged it. About an hour later, I went to plug it back in, and the blue light kept flickering on and off. Then I started to smell it burning, so I unplugged it. I figured it was just old so I was looking online for places to recycle it. Then I stumbled upon this recall. So I was trying to get more information on what to do.

The product, in the report: Coby TF-DVD1993 19” TFT LCD tv with side loading DVD player.

TV in use was a Coby TF-DVD1993. This was the property of a resident of our nursing home. It was mounted from the ceiling, as are all tv’s in hospitals/nursing homes. Approximately 6:05 am, the tv combusted. Smoke filled the room, flames started to come from the tv, which then melted the outlet directly above that it plugs into (tripping the breaker). The residents were evacuated immediately and the fire was neutralized with an extinguisher by our staff, and the Fire Department responded to our alarm to assure it was safe and fully extinguished. Luckily no injuries were reported. The staff member that extinguished the flame did request to get a respiratory exam as he had a previous condition and wanted to assure there was no damage from smoke inhalation.

The entire top of the tv is melted and burned. The outlet is scorched, but there is no fire damage within the electrical box, or above the drywall, so it is very clear the fire began within the tv set itself.

The product, in the report: Black 32” Coby flat panel television

We received a 32” Coby flat panel television as a gift. On 3/4/15 our apartment caught on fire resulting in total loss of my finance and my belongings as well as the death of our pet. The NY Fire Department and insurance company (Chelsea Town Series II LLC) for the building investigated and found that it was caused by electrical wiring. Chelsea Town Series specifically cited the fire’s origin as the confines of electrical components in our Coby television. Please see the attached photos of the damage, Claim response letter from F and L Claims Service and NYFD incident report. The fire left us homeless.

We were unaware until recently that 13 retailers issued recalls on the product due to electrical component failure.

The product, in the report: 32” black COBY Flat Panel LCD TV

I was sold a 32” Coby tv for $75.00. I was told that the tv “shuts off every now and then”. After getting it home, it shut off 4 times in 40 minutes. Then the next day it shut off 3 times in a little over an hour. I also noticed that it would come back on by itself as well, no matter how many times I pushed the power button. This particular fact was not explained to me. So I got online and tried to find a solution to what might be going on with the tv. That’s when I found out that it had been recalled for safety reasons (possible burn/fire hazard) and that resale of a recalled item was a federal offense. I immediately unplugged the tv as instructed by the website. I tried texting the woman who sold me the tv 4 times, but got no response. When I tried to call, one of her kids answered and handed her the phone, at which time she hung up on me. I’ve tried to explain that I rent a room from friends who have kids, and I myself have kids that come and visit me, and I do not want to put anyone in harms way with an item that is a safety hazard. This got a response from the seller saying that I was a scam artist and that I was threatening her by telling her it was a federal offense. I responded by saying that in order for me to have been remotely close to being a scam artist, I would have had to be the one selling the recalled tv. Anyway, at this point I just want to know what I should do. Did I just get conned out of $75.00 and there’s nothing I can do about it?

The product, in the report: Coby 32” LCDTV Model TFTV3229 Serial Number LGWXESBVE04T01S02

I purchased 2 Coby 32” LCDTV’s from Hhgregg on 6/15/2012. One is on the recall list that I plan to return this weekend. The other is the same model just different serial #. Model: TFTV3229 Serial # LGWXESBVE04T01S02. In June 2013 we were using it and it started making weird noises, loosing the picture, and started smoking. So we unplugged it and set it to the side. I wrote to the company ,But I didn’t know that they went out of business until I just got the recall email from Hhgregg. I called them but because of the serial number they will not exchange it. They told me to report it here.

The product, in the report: Brand: Coby Size: 32 inch

I was recently made aware of the recall on the Coby 32 inch TV’s and the list of the serial numbers you provided do not match mine however I think you should be aware that I have experienced the same issue that others are reporting. My Coby TV is sitting on a closet right now because numerous times the cord and tv would get extremely hot, to hot to touch. I still continued using the TV though until one day in September smoke started coming out of the back vents. I immediately unplugged the TV and haven’t used it since.

The product, in the report: Coby 32 in. LED TV

Our 9 year old son was sleeping in his bedroom with the door shut when the smoke alarm sounded. My husband ran to check (he was in the next room) and when he opened the door smoke was coming from the television. As he approached he saw a small flame inside the tv. Within seconds the flames quickly spread. In less then 30 seconds from when the alarm sounded the tv was engulfed in flames. My son was sleeping less then 12 inches away from the tv.

My husband grabbed the tv and ran outside with it. The tv, even in a mound of snow continued to burn for several minutes. Burning pieces fell from the tv and I had to stomp out fire on 3 sections of carpet as I tried to get my son out of the room. I then noticed a piece on fire by the front door and had to stomp out that fire.

THe upper left side of the tv is burned right through the back.
