The product, in the report: Quill Corporation brand 15 sheet paper shredder. Model #QL-TXC15A. Serial number 111601723 purchased 10/19/2011
Laflen-Cunningham Agency, Ltd., my employer, purchased a Quill Corporation brand paper shredder on 10/19/11. The model number is QL-TXC15A, and the serial number is 111601723. On Thursday, February 14, 2013, my co-worker and I were emptying the collection basket of the paper shredder and cleaning out the paper that was stuck in the shredding teeth. We unplugged the machine, emptied the basket, and then vacuumed the teeth to remove the remaining paper. After putting it back together, we plugged it in and shredded a sheet of paper to make sure it was not clogged. The paper shredded just fine, but the motor did not shut off automatically as was set to do. We unplugged it and vacuumed the teeth again. We plugged it back in and started to run another sheet of paper through the shredder when it popped and a fireball blew open the collection basket. My co-worker was feeding the paper through when it happened, and she sustained minor burns on her hand and her hair was singed.
I kicked the collection basket closed and the fire went out on its own. No other damage was done other than the shredder itself, but it could have potentially been much worse.
