Emergency room Made Feb 15, 2017, sent to the company Mar 15, 2017, published by CPSC Mar 29, 2017
The product, in the report: Beige-colored, two-piece paper shredder, electrically operated when paper is inserted into a top-mounted motorized unit. The assembled unit is 15-inches tall, 8-inches wide (horizontally), 12-inches long (horizontally) and weighs approximately 12-pounds empty.
At 3:30 PM, on Wednesday, February 8th, 2017, I was in my office doing routine paperwork and filing papers. I went to use my paper shredder to eliminate a single sheet of regular paper that had some account numbers. As I inserted the paper into the intake slot I heard the machine making strange grinding sounds and would only take 1/4 (one-quarter) of the paper. I removed the paper, turned it around and reinserted it into the machine. As I was looking into the machine there was a sudden burst of flame which came up and burned my face and head. The lower container of the shredder, holding long, thin strips of paper, also caught fire, and quickly became larger than the shredder mechanism fire. I picked up the paper shredded container, ran into the next room which is a bathroom, placed it on the drain of the shower stall and turned on the water which put out the fire. I returned to my office where the shredder mechanism was smoldering on a commercial-grade floor pad, unplugged the unit, and I ran out the door and threw the unit into the snow. The local fire department, the Worden Volunteer Fire Department, dispatched a unit to ensure that the fire was extinguished and not likely to reoccur. There was no evidence of any damage to my office area, desk or ancillary items. There was some smoke which quickly cleared when we opened windows and doors. For safety’s sake, the volunteer fireman suggested I visit the emergency room at the Billings Clinic Hospital, approximately 15-minutes from my house. I was at the emergency room from approximately 4:30PM, same date, until 10:15 PM, same date. My injuries included first-degree burns on my face and bald head. I also experienced minor first degree burns to my right arm wrist. Both of my eye brows and eye lashes were singed. Hair on the side of my head was also singed. I declined the application of any pain medicine or creams. It should be noted that my brand-new [REDACTED]-brand eye glasses’ lens were damaged beyond repair. I have taken photographs of the damaged paper shredder which are attached to this report. I have not discarded or cleaned up the paper shredder or containment basket. I have discarded the burnt paper shreds because of the smell.
