  1. First aid

Made Dec 1, 2023, sent to the company Dec 6, 2023, published by CPSC Dec 20, 2023

The product, in the report: White and black small printer.

I bought a Canon Printer at Walmart. I brought it home. Model number TS3522. I opened it up and was trying to find where the ink went. I found that the ink was behind a white plastic shield. I had to reach my thick hand inside to pull it open and it scratched my hand. I finally got It open and found the ink cartridge holders inside. You have to flip the bars down to put in it. When I first tried I slammed my knuckles against the roof of the printer. Caused cuts. I then went to close it and again it cut my finger. I then ended up bleeding. I immediately closed it up and tried to get my hand out. The opening is so narrow it was hard. I only opened it one other time and that was to take pictures. I called canon immediately and talked to a guy named [REDACTED] who is suppose to be a customer service escalations manager. I told him what happened. I told him we took the printer back because we don’t want a dangerous product around. He asked for pictures and said as soon as he got the pictures he would take it to legal and have them contact me. I did that and the next day he called me back and said you took the printer back so we can’t examine it there fore legal says oh well no compensation and they won’t talk to you. I got nothing else. He hung up after being rude. I got no claim number for a claim or complaint I got no claim status so he did nothing. There is no proof that he is willing to give me that he did anything or talked to anyone . When I asked for someone else to speak to he refused. Said he was the only one.

  2. No one hurt

Made Nov 17, 2018, sent to the company Nov 27, 2018, published by CPSC Feb 6, 2019

The product, in the report: Canon Multifunction Printer, serial #KLNA47233. Model appears to be MX492. Black, plastic, printer approximately 18” long x 12” wide x 10” high. May be a scanner too.

The printer was sitting on a desk in a dormitory room. It was plugged into a nearby power strip. The power strip was plugged into a duplex outlet adjacent to it. The printer was not in use at the time of the incident. Two girls live in the dorm room. Neither tenant was in the room at the time. No one had been in the room for approximately one and a half hours prior to the incident. According to one of the tenants, the printer is very rarely used.

The printer appears to have overheated internally. It generated sufficient heat to ignite the printer plastic housing. If facing the printer, the fire appears to have started within the left corner of the device. Fire extended to the adjacent walls and underside of a wooden bookshelf which is hung on a wall above the desk. An activated room fire sprinkler extinguished the fire. Fire damage was limited to the printer, some surrounding contents on the desk, and the adjacent walls and bookshelf above.
