No one hurt Made Feb 7, 2024, sent to the company Feb 12, 2024, published by CPSC Feb 27, 2024
The product, in the report: Here is the URL for this product from the Manufacturer’s own website: www.brother-usa.com/products/DS920DW Although discontinued, they do sell refurbished units and many accessories including new batteries from https://www.brother-usa.com/search#q=DS920dw&t=tab-All&layout=card/
While using a Brother mobile duplex scanner model DSmobile 920DW / DS-920DW for short, I went to move the scanner sitting on my desk by grabbing hold of the right side when I was surprised to discover that it was extremely hot and instantly let go. I unplugged the USB cord from my laptops charging / connection port and allowed over an hour for this electronic device to safely cool down, showing no sign on the outside of being damaged. I opened the battery compartment on that same side to discover that the Brother rechargeable Battery (Li-Ion) 3.7V 1700mAh 6.29Wh Model LD0665001 (still being sold) was expanded inside the battery slot that took some effort to remove. Sitting in a storage bag for this mobile scanner were two additional Brother batteries, one which was already expanded. I reported this to Brother CS/Technical Support and was assigned incident [REDACTED]. Brother claimed battery is no longer being sold by them, their own website says differently. I sent a reply before knowing this that so far has not been replied to.

No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 23, 2021, sent to the company Dec 3, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 17, 2021
The product, in the report: Brother laser printer model DCP-L2550DW
My less than 2 year old Brother printer, model DCP-L2550DW, started tripping my AFCI breaker, indicating an unsafe electrical condition in the printer. I isolated the fault to the printer by ascertaining that the breaker only tripped when a job was sent to the printer (not every time) and never tripped for any other reason. I have other devices plugged into the same outlet. I have unplugged the printer and it is out of service. I contacted the manufacturer but received no satisfaction. I specifically told them this was a safety-related issue and asked to have a manager call me back. So far, no response. I’m surprised that they don’t want this unit returned for failure analysis, to make sure this isn’t a wide spread problem with Brother printers. Needless to say, I’d like them to replace my printer but that may not be within your mission. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hurt, care not known Made Sep 18, 2018, sent to the company Nov 1, 2018, published by CPSC Nov 16, 2018
The product, in the report: BROTHER PRINTER
The printer toner is so toxic, that there is no way to stay in the same room where the printer is. You can smell the toner while it is printing and on the newly printed documents. The toxic toner affects the respiratory system. The toner smells equivalent to what it might make your respiratory system feel like after smoking the equivalent 10 cigarettes.

The product, in the report: Brother All in one printer, MFC-L2710DW, Serial# U6496C8N759039, Toner cartridge
I learned recently certain Brother printers were recalled in 2002. I currently own a Brother all in one printer MFC-L2710DW. Has this model number been recalled? I am finding I am extremely allergic to inks and toners from different manufacturers. I have purchased these all in ones from different manufacturers, do a trial, 1-3 months and return them, I am finding their inks and toners are very toxic.

No one hurt Made Oct 1, 2016, sent to the company Oct 11, 2016, published by CPSC Oct 25, 2016
The product, in the report: Brother MFC9130 CW
Brother Printer Mod MFC9130CW used at my home for personal use. The printer start having problems with the printing process and smelling as something is burning, I check the back of the printer and find out that the coating that protect the fuser was all in pieces and causing extra overheating to the machine and papers as they come out after printing. I been in contact with the manufacturer for almost over two weeks and yet they haven’t resolve my issue and haven’t give any answers. I think this problem may can cause a fire in any house or place and really concerns me that the manufacturer haven’t taking this seriously as it should be.

No one hurt Made Mar 7, 2014, sent to the company Mar 18, 2014, published by CPSC Apr 1, 2014
The product, in the report: Brother all-in-one/multi-function printer, SN U62905H1F205211
On March 6, 2014, I was working at the computer when I noticed that a plume of smoke was rising from my Brother MFC-J430W all-in-one/multi-function printer. The printer was plugged into the computer and electric wall socket but was not being used at the time. A hole had burned through the left side wall of the printer from the inside, where the smoke was escaping. I immediately unplugged the printer but it continued to emit smoke. I carried it to the garage where, after a time, the fire died out. This being the only electrical device that had a problem, there is no reason to think that the problem was the result of a power surge.
I immediately contacted Brother Industries by phone and explained exactly what had happened.

No one hurt Made Dec 13, 2011, sent to the company Dec 22, 2011, published by CPSC Jan 9, 2012
The product, in the report: Brother International Multi-Function Printer Gray in color. DCP-7020
In December 2011, I turned on my DCP-7020 Brother International multi-function printer. The machine started to smoke, spark and made horrid burning smells in my home. This machine always seemed to have a running hot issue, shut down, cooled down and was ususally fine. The smoke alarm went off. This could have been a hazardous situation if I was not around the area. I immediately unplugged the machine and called Brother at 1-877-276-8437. I take to [REDACTED]who said that he could be able to trade out the machine for a refurbished machine if I give him a major credit card (I had debit card or checking account) or take the problematic machine to a Brother service center (I am retired and senior citizen; do not drive and this was not an option). Brother International stated that this was being escalated to a supervisor and that I have would a call back the next morning (24 hours). Of course that never happened and I had to call back. I asked for a Supervisor and got the same exact run-around from an employee named [REDACTED]. I then asked for a Manager and they gave me the number to call the Corporate President’s executive offices at [REDACTED]. I left a message and within the hour a man by the name of [REDACTED] returned my call. He stated that he reported to the President of the Company and was the “Executive Liason”. Basically, he gave me the same exact offers and told me that they could do nothing for me unless I put $50.00 on a major credit card or physically take the machine to an authorized center. That was not an option, I could never lift the machine, I do not have a car and I do not drive. I am stuck with a useless Brother machine that is a hazard with NO resolution from the Executive Offices or President of Brother. I want resolution for myself and others that may have this same problem in the future.
