The product, in the report: ATIVA 14 Sheet Super-Micro Cut Shredder, MODEL A14MC19, ITEM 9320853

Our clerical leader was beginning to use the paper shredder ATIVA 14 sheet super-micro cut shredder in his office and had inserted 3 sheets of paper. The shredder exploded with a ball of fire coming out the top, the box that collects the shredded paper blew out the front, and noxious black smoke was coming from the shredder. This shredder has not been used much and it was not overheated. He had only begun to use it this day.

The product, in the report: Ativa HD800 Shredder

Shortly after I purchased the Ativa shredder HD800 the protective cover came off where it was to protect hands/fingers from getting down into the shredder motor. The machine began to run constantly once the on button was turned on. It is only supposed to begin to run when paper is put in it. It would run constantly, then over heat, smoke and quit, then soon as it cooled down it would start to run again constantly. Shortly after the protective cover came off, I noticed a very slight hair line crack from the opening for the paper. It gradually got bigger and longer until it ran from the opening for the paper to the edge of the top of the unit. It appeared that the motor and cutting cylinders were too heavy for the plastic body that held same and this weight was causing the unit to crack from stress of the weight. It was also making the opening to the unit even wider therefore more dangerous. Then the unit began to not run when turned on unless I held down the forward button. This item should be recalled and consumer’s money refunded. The cutting cylinders are supposed to be warranted for 5 years, yet the manufacturer Ativa nor does the seller Office Depot want to refund consumers money even though both are well aware of the items numerous problems.

I used this shredder for personal use. It was never damaged by fire, accident, negligence, miss use, improper cleaning or other circumstances not directly attributable to manufacturing defects. The cutting cylinders are supposed to be warranted for 5 years. It is obvious that the manufacturer Ativa and the seller Office Depot knew of the problems of this unit as evidenced by comsumer reviews, see below:
