    An Amazon Basics Paper Shredder exploded in my home when I turned it on this past Saturday, 2/15/2025. I sustained 1st and 2nd degree burns in several areas. I have damage to both eyes, that include swelling, pain, redness, blurred vision and the inability to form tears. I lost most of my eyelashes, eyebrows and portions of my hair. I have singed airways and nasal passageways, making breathing painful as well as a persistent heavy cough. I’m dealing with anxiety and trauma from having what I thought was a safely made product from a reputable company literally blow up in my face. Due to the defective product causing these injuries, I am missing work, I’m in pain and I’m missing events with family and friends. I have talked to several firms, but I keep being told that their retainer fees would take all compensation received. I have also been told by all of them that my claim valid since I have all of the evidence, including a video of the incident, as I have a camera in my home. I have the shredder, the burnt and melted clothes, photos of the injuries (which are still present now), and medical records. None of the physicians have been able to give me a length of recovery time, just that the breathing issues could last months, if not longer. They have not given a base timeline on when my eyes will recover or if this may turn into a life-long condition.

    I bought an “Amazon Basics 8-sheet high-security micro-cut shredder with pullout basket” in March. In August I walked into my office and noticed the shredder was running continuously, and the room smelled of burned plastic/smoke.

    18 month old Amazon Basics Cross Cut Paper Shredder and Credit Card Shredder with 4.1 Gallon Bin became jammed. It kept turning on, and after 30 seconds exploded and caught on fire. No smell of electrical fire previous, no apparent overheating. Fireball was large enough to burn facial hair while at arms distance.

    Amazon Basics 6-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper and Credit Card Home Office Shredder, purchased Dec 9, 2020, turned on by itself. Fortunately, I was at home. Though there was no smoke, there was the smell of burning plastic. There was no shredded paper trapped in the cutter and the collection basket was only partially filled with shredded paper. I strongly believe this is a fire hazard.

    I purchased an AmazonBasics 6-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper and Credit Card Shredder in 2015. While we were away on vacation, the shredder began running by itself. When a friend came to check on the house in our absence, the shredder was running continuously and was smoking hot. Luckily, nothing flammable was in the vicinity so no harm was done. We don’t know how long it was running but it could have been for days.The shredder was left unplugged until our return. Now it runs continuously anytime it is put into the Auto mode, even if no papers are in the slot.

    We pruchased an AmazonBasics 6-Sheet Cross-Cut Paper and Credit Card Shredder approx 2.5 yrs ago. A few months ago it would not turn off on the auto setting intermittently. I cleaned the sensor as instructed in the troubleshooting instructions and it would work for several weeks so we left it in the auto setting. It started to turn itself on when we were not using it at all hours of the day and night. About 2 weeks ago I came back from walking the dogs and heard it running in the office. I had been gone less than an hour and smelled something burning in the office. Smoke was coming from the unit. I have no double that this thing would have caught fire if I had not come home when I did and found it. There are other reviews on Amazon complaining about the shredder turning itself on and running until it got very hot.

    I came into my office to find it operating despite being in automatic mode, where it should only switch on if paper is inserted. The shredder head unit was extremely hot, and since my bin below it was nearly full, it potentially could have caught fire.

    I later emptied the bin, made sure the head unit was free of paper, and yet any time it was in auto mode, it would operate despite there being no paper.
