The device was purchased from Lenovo’s official website on April 18, 2023, and was delivered on May 1, 2023. The malfunctioning and consequent incident occurred on July 27, 2023. If more information is needed for identifying the product or the incident, please feel free to contact me.

    Dear CPSC,

I am writing to report a safety concern and incident related to the VT1000 Dual Display Universal USB 3.0 Docking Station manufactured by Lenovo.

On July 27, 2023, when I connected the docking station to the included power adapter, the power indicator light started flickering. Shortly after, white smoke started emanating from the lock slot, accompanied by a mild explosion sound. I immediately disconnected the power source, which ceased the emission of smoke.

At the time of the incident, the product was being used for its intended purpose, to connect multiple electronic devices, such as an E-ink display, keyboard, and mouse. I was operating the device at the time of the incident.

The product was being used as intended, with electronic devices connected to it through various ports. There were no abnormal usage conditions; the environment was a typical home office setting.

Thankfully, no physical injuries occurred during this incident. However, the potential for harm was significant. The incident could have potentially resulted in fire or electrical injury if the power hadn’t been disconnected promptly or if the situation had escalated further.

This incident also led to considerable property damage. My [REDACTED] display and keyboard, both connected to the docking station at the time, were rendered inoperable, likely due to a sudden surge in voltage caused by the malfunctioning docking station.

I have already contacted Lenovo, the manufacturer, regarding this issue, but I wanted to bring this to your attention given the severity of the incident and the potential for harm to others using the same or similar products.

I am willing to provide more information or support an investigation in any way I can.
