No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 25, 2026, sent to the company Sep 2, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 17, 2026
The product, in the report: Steam deck hand held console 512 gb lcd
The plastic casing of the handheld console has physically warped, bubbled, and melted due to an extreme internal thermal failure adjacent to the battery charging circuit/USB-C power management system. The product is an immediate fire hazard. The steam deck has had multiple charging issues and a charging port replacement by valve 12/25. The steamdeck was purchased june of 24 and had charging issues shortly thereafter which required multiple messages to valve who sent new chargers rather than fixing the charging issue. The port failed 12/25 and was replaced by valve under a warranty exception. 8/17/26 the steam deck had a burning smell and the case melted. The steam deck is no longer operative amd is a hazard to plug in. Valve wants me to pay to have it repaired by their 3rd party repair service rather than replacing a defectvie unit. This is a severe failure in the hardware and fire risk not a typical wear and tear issue.

No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 26, 2025, sent to the company Dec 2, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 16, 2025
The product, in the report: Steam Deck handheld gaming device with built-in lithium-ion battery. Black color, portable console with integrated 7-inch screen, control pads, and internal rechargeable battery. The product is used for playing Steam and PC games
I purchased a brand-new Steam Deck handheld gaming device manufactured by Valve. Within the first day of use, the internal lithium-ion battery began to malfunction. The device would not hold a charge and could only operate while plugged in. Shortly afterward, the battery began visibly swelling, causing the back panel of the device to bulge outward near the left grip.
The swelling progressed over several days and made the device unsafe to handle. I stopped using or charging the product as soon as I noticed the deformation because I was concerned about the risk of a lithium battery fire. The device was used in a normal manner and was only a few hours old when the issue appeared.
There were no injuries, but the battery swelling created a significant fire hazard inside my home. I contacted the manufacturer, and they acknowledged the issue, but the return process was delayed for several days, forcing me to store a potentially hazardous product longer than appropriate.
I am reporting this because a lithium-ion battery swelling in a brand-new device is a serious safety concern. I want to ensure this issue is documented in case it reflects a broader manufacturing or battery defect.
