The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Book 3 Model 1899 i7 15” convertible laptop 32 gigs of ram
Surface Book 3 battery in the screen portion of the computer is expanding. The representatives at Microsoft didn’t advise me to stop using the laptop nor did they advise me it was unsafe to fly with. They said “I probably shouldn’t”..
The device is not user reparable and they informed me I’m out of warranty and out of luck. $649 to replace my 2 year old $3000 laptop
The most unsafe part of this is their safety device. I know an expanding battery can burst. The laptop isn’t safe for my home, and it sure as [REDACTED] isn’t safe for airline travel.
Please research expanding battery issues with Surface devices across the board. A very common problem. And it must be addressed.
[REDACTED]
These batteries are of much higher capacity than the Note 7 we had a ban on years prior.....
It would be awful if one of these ignited in air.
Microsoft must fix our devices for free - this is their quality problem. Not the consumers who struggled to scrape $3k together for a device that’s now a danger.
Please note my biggest concern out of all of this is the lack of safety regard on Microsoft’s “Experts” side. I know better than to continue allowing the device around, but if I didn’t my apartment could be the consequence. Or worse if I was dumb enough to take it on a plane
As of now it’s in a pelican case outside on a concrete pad, in case it decides to combust.........

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Pro 4 computer size about 11” x 8”
I use my Microsoft Surface Pro 4 computer just about every day with a monitor. When I opened the cover of the computer one day, I noticed the screen on my has separated from the device. I contacted Microsoft on October 14, 2022 several times (different departments)to discover how they could help resolve this issue. I described the issue and they recommended that I do not use the computer because the battery could explode or catch fire. They no longer repair this product. They offered a trade in credit of $55.00. After I requested for another option to replace this computer since it seems to be a dangerous and defective product, they said they could not offer a replacement for my computer, but would send my contact information to another department in the event that a future program would become available to resolve this problem. There were no injuries. I told Microsoft they should take responsibility for their defective product and offer a replacement.

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Pro 4 256 GB
Microsoft Surface Pro 4’s (2-in-1 tablet) battery expanded, resulting in a bulge that pushes the screen out. I have experienced severe screen flickering issues just over 3 years after purchasing this brand new device from the Microsoft store (bought December 2016). Then, a free months after screen flickering issues, the tablet/laptop does not operate at all unless it is plugged in to a charging cable. I reached out to Microsoft, went into the store, and they told me that it is out of warranty. They did not inform me that there was a supposedly extended warranty for this defective device. I was only at most 2 months out of warranty!!! The only option they offered was that I pay $500 to receive a REFURBISHED device of the same model. No thanks. I continued using the product as I did not have a budget to buy another $1K+ device (bought an [REDACTED] for ~$500 at [REDACTED] for basic computer use). Now that my SP4’s screen is bulging out due to the expanded battery, I am afraid to charge it to restore the tablet back to manufacturer’s setting (since the product does not turn on without being plugged in). TERRIBLE!

Microsoft Surface Book (Device ID: FE4C5EA3-E349-4771-85BC-51F40E569659 Product ID: 00330-62889-19615-AAOEM) developed severe bulging battery causing the keyboard base to split open creating a fire and chemical hazard. Reported to Microsoft ([Case #:[REDACTED]]). Unit was no longer covered under warranty and Microsoft refused to repair or replace unless payment (~$500). Testimony from other Surface Book users indicates that if a device in this condition was presented to a Microsoft Store employee the issue would be resolved on the spot and a customer not permitted to leave the store with this dangerous condition. However, since Microsoft closed its stores in June 2020, this is no longer an option.

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - tablet
My Microsoft surface Pro4 started showing yellow discoloration on the screen over time. One day while using it, I heard a “ping” and the screen detached from the body of the device. Online research suggests this happened as a result of a swollen battery, which poses a fire/chemical danger and not repairable. I have not used the device since then.

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface book, silver, 8GB RAM 256GB hard drive
I purchased a Microsoft Surface book in 2016 with a 3 yr extended warranty, the first one had a battery issue that impacted the screen and it was replaced by MS in 2018/19, the replacement I was given started having issues early in 2020 with screen color and then bulging and a separated screen. I reported it to MS and they wanted me to pay $599 for a out of warranty replacement. I refused, then within the last couple weeks the batteries in the base have started to expand and caused the base of the laptop to split open. I contacted MS and provided them with pictures and video of the issue, they refused to help unless I pay them $599 I fear this will either explode, melt or start a fire.

No incident, no one hurt Made Sep 30, 2020, sent to the company Oct 30, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 16, 2020
The product, in the report: Surface Pro 4 , with an i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of Storage
I recently began noticing yellowish-brownish areas on the left and right side of the display on my Surface Pro 4 device, predominately on the left side. This seemed to be heat related, since it occurred more, and the discolored area became larger, when the device was running hot, with the cooling fan constantly running at what appeared to be the maximum speed. Eventually, it was noticed that the left side of the display bulged out and became separated from the frame. I then began researching this further and filed a service request/case with Microsoft under the category/issue type drop down selection of “Lifted, separated, or bulging screen.” After multiple back and forth communications with Microsoft as part of the service request/case and additional research in regards to this I came to understand that the “Lifted, separated, or bulging screen” is due to the battery expanding, which separated the display from the frame. Microsoft responded with a boiler plate response, which has contradictory language within it: in one sentence they state there is “no inherent risk or safety concern associated with these expanded batteries” and then immediately follow it with “the lithium ion batteries used in Surface devices contain materials that can injure skin, eyes, and lungs if punctured” and “Surface devices with expanded batteries should not be connected to AC power as it could possibly lead to rupture;” which is not a misuse according to their labeling, i.e., you should be able to use the device while connected to AC power/a docking station (this is predominately how we use the device), however, a product design flaw created a condition where it cannot be used while connected to AC power/a docking station due to a safety concern according to them.
The device is now unusable, according to Microsoft, while plugged in due to a safety concern given the potential for the expanded battery to rupture. Additionally, it can’t be used when it is unplugged given the potential for a safety concern with the battery, i.e., it can’t be carried around, left powered on unattended, taken on a plane, etc., given the state of the battery and the potential for it to continue to expand and rupture, or to rupture in its current expanded state. This is a safety issue that is still occurring with product in the field and it needs to be addressed. I have seen numerous complaints online in regards to this issue. In some cases it was stated that the device/battery “caught fire and exploded,” evident from images that were provided in that case as well. Additionally, Microsoft knows this is an unsafe condition due to the expanded battery condition regardless of whether or not it is being charged or discharged, i.e., being used, given that they stated if the device was returned for replacement a “special return box must be used for shipping the damaged Surface.”
They have chosen to deal with this unsafe condition by putting out the boiler plate statements previously referenced (only after a customer has brought their particular occurrence to Microsoft’s attention; customers should be made aware of this before it happens, without having to research the condition and finding out about the unsafe condition on their own), and by trying to get some defective product out of the field by replacing it if it is three years and under, where the time period was based on profit/loss and not on safety. I am hoping that Microsoft will eventually get to a safety recall in regards to this, hopefully before there are additional occurrences of batteries/devices exploding and catching fire, and before anyone gets hurt. The service request/case that I have filed with Microsoft is still open and continuously being escalated since they will not replace the failed and unsafe device without charging a substantial fee. I just want the ability to use a safe product, a product that I paid significant money for, for longer than four years. Especially now, when this product (a PC) is needed more than ever. I don’t think that is too much to ask for.

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Book G1 16GB mem 512 SSD
I own a Surface Book G1 from Microsoft (2 in 1 laptop with detachable base). 3 years 8 months old. The batteries have begun to swell causing distortions to the case and base. Microsoft has acknowledged it is an issue but is requiring end users to pay upwards of $600 to get fixed/replaced. This is a fire and health hazard if these batteries fail. A quick forums search finds there are hundreds of such cases.

The product, in the report: Microsoft Surface Book - 256GB / Intel Core i7
Bought a high-end Microsoft Surface Book laptop 3-4 years ago. Over the last couple months I’ve noticed the screen is bulging due to the battery behind it expanding. This also causes discoloration along the edges of the screen. I’m concerned the battery is getting dangerous.
Contacted Microsoft and it appears to be a known issue. They’re offering free replacements, but only for 3 years after purchase date. Mine is outside of that window.
This is not due to neglect or misuse on my part. It’s a flaw that Microsoft should address regardless of date of purchase due to its danger. Laptops should work for 5 years before replacement or dangerous battery degradation.

This regarding my Surface pro for windows 8 my serial number is: 054712230853.
Please note there is ALREADY a recall program in place for the Distal end of the power cord (that goes into the wall). This is under surfacepro/com recall
This is regarding the complete opposite end to which some at the recall center have stated they are replacing r/t fires but to date all I get is lies and protraction from the various section handling this window product.
This product twisted at where the power cord connects to the computer and started a fire on my bed.
