I suffered a serious burn injury from a heart rate monitor I was wearing during the Portland Marathon on Sunday Oct 5, 2014.

I purchased the RC3 GPS watch and heart rate monitor on Friday Oct 3, 2014 from a company called Polar www.polar.com

Polar had a booth at the Portland Marathon bib pick-up festival and I purchased the watch and monitor there.

I followed the instructions carefully. I set up the watch and heart rate monitor. I moistened the strap as directed. I attached the battery component to the strap and connected it around my chest with the battery component facing up and positioned just over the xiphoid process at the lower part of my sternum.

Everything seemed to be working fine and I was tracking my heart rate, mileage, and time for over 20 miles of the marathon.

It was a hot day so some of the residents of the homes along the marathon route were standing by the road with hoses to spray down the runners.

One of them sprayed me with the hose and at that moment I felt an electric arc on my chest immediately under the part of the strap where the battery attaches. I felt severe pain and there was the smell of burnt skin.

When I finished the race, I looked at my chest which was then hurting pretty bad and I had sustained a nasty burn in 2 horizontal strips across my chest. I was up all night with pain. I attached a picture that I took this morning with my cell phone.

Has this been reported before? I am fearful that I bought a defective product and that others might suffer a similar fate. After all runners routinely run in the rain and on hot race days, it is very common for the spectators to hose down runners.
