How badly anyone was hurt

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Interactive Board, Projector [dual pen screen] M/N (Promethean) PRM-30 S/N 60619354

I am writing this description of the product defect with the Promethean Board device so that you can better understand what needs to be done to make this product safe for everyone to use. I don’t think that the original report that I called in and submitted online was accurate or detailed enough for your organization to take the proper action needed to resolve this issue properly.

The Promethean Board is an integrated LCD Projector and hard bodied screen that is used to make presentations in a school. Teachers regularly teach lessons on this interactive board and students use it as well. It is used on a daily basis for most of the day and is a very popular teaching aide that has replaced white boards and dry erase markers almost entirely. The problem we are experiencing is that the mounting system employed by the board is not robust enough for its purpose. The board uses only a hanger style mount to secure it to a bolted wall mount system. In other words the entire hard display board, an 82 inch screen not too different in size and weight to a large flat panel LCD TV, is held only by a very loose mount that can easily be toppled over by any accidental movement to the board. The board itself is not securely bolted to the wall mount as it should be.

To better illustrate this point we had two teachers who tried to adjust the board’s position on the wall last year. The board fell on top of the teachers as they jostled the board off its hanger mounting system. Although these two people were not hurt in this case they could have been. If this had been small children this similar incident could have become a tragic accident with serious injuries or even death as a consequence. I sincerely feel that a simple retrofit kit could be designed and installed that would make this board much safer with a solid bolted mounting system. I don’t think that the company that makes this product would have any technical issue at all with designing such a safer mount. How they could ever think that a, loose mount holding a large heavy screen in a classroom would be safe around teachers and small children is beyond common sense. In California where earthquakes are a common occurrence such a weak mounting system has no place at all within a school.

My only goal in making this report is to see that this engineering oversight is remedied. I want to make sure that this firm and their US distributor Logical Choice make all of the upgrades, including parts and labor, available at no cost to all of their clients and customers. The safety of all of our children has no price. What would you pay in order to help keep your children or the children of your neighbor safe?
