The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Dell Latitude E5570 laptop

The battery in my Dell Laptop (Dell Latitude E5570) became ‘swollen’ recently. This is something that happens to laptop batteries sometimes.. when the battery gets old and gets towards the end of its usable life, the casing inside the battery starts to deteriorate and the electrolyte / battery acid stuff starts to leak within the battery which releases gas, and the battery starts to bulge. This can be extremely dangerous, we’ve all seen videos online of smartphones and laptops exploding out of nowhere.

This happened to my Dell battery and has happened to hundreds of other people. If you just Google ‘Dell swollen battery’ you’ll find posts online of tons of people that this happened to. I’ve even read accounts of people whose laptops started smoking or even caught fire. There is risk of the battery / laptop catching on fire or even exploding.

And even if you catch it early and take the battery out, now you have a partially broken, bulging battery that is essentially a dangerous piece of toxic waste. You can’t just dispose of them normally either because it’s dangerous to sanitation workers. I now have to make an appointment with my county’s Household Hazardous Waste processing facility.

This is very simply a failure of quality control on the part of Dell that is a threat to people’s lives and homes. Please do something about it.
